Is Maldives a safe place?

So lately i've been hearing some things about Maldives regarding sex-trafficking and stuff from my girlfriend's family, as they are getting more and more worried about us goin over there by ourselves. How safe is Maldives for tourists?

There has been a tiny number of deaths due to non-swimmers thinking that using a rubber ring to keep afloat over the reef will give them magic powers.

Stay away from the capital city/island of Male (which most tourists do) where political unrest occurs occasionally and you will be 100% safe.

Nothing very dramatic on the resort islands usually. Most of the Maldives news is focused on Male or other large local islands like Addu.

Best to go straight from the airport island to your resort island. Then you never step foot on Male itself.

Safety is a big part of the beauty of holidaying in the Maldives...

I could think of some little news stories for a few of the resorts, but not many. Which resort are you going to?

The Maldives is one of the safest places on earth for tourists - assuming you can swim (or if you can't swim, you're not stupid enough to go into the water!).

I've not heard about sex trafficking but if it happens here, it's people being imported into the country, not tourists being taken away!

Basically you spend your time on a resort island, crime on these islands is so low as to be unreportable. It's just one island, one hotel, that's it. There is no need to go to male. It's on a different island to the airport.

Ps, the problems you list happen in many many countries, inc India. You are statistically far far more likely to e encounter crime there than in the Maldives, just as we are in Europe or Americans are in the US etc.

Hmm, now let me think... which is safer?..... Calcutta or a speck of sand in the middle of the ocean. Tricky one that.

The resorts are generally very safe but there have been a few isolated incidents on the resorts over the years. There have been a few reported on here as well. The local island are a different matter where according to the local newspapers there have a few incidents recently.
