Desperate: In search of accomodation

Hi All,

Any help at this time would be good. We are a couple and have flights into Male in just under two weeks time (19-25th December). We have no accomodation arrangements and have never been to the Maldives. Can anyone help to point us the right direction please. The following are some things we are looking for:

1. budget to mid range. Guesthouses with meals are good but self catering rentals would also be ok.

2. a place where it is easy to arrange for some good fishing.

3. Near good snorkelling sites.

4. We don't need to be in any exclusive island.

5. Friendly hosts who can help us with daily activities.

Any recommendations or contacts will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

There really is not any self catering rentals, or the few there are is not really what you would be looking for.

Guest houses are fine, but remember if you are on a local inhabited island it's a whole different ball game to a resort island ie. cover up thighs and shoulders, no swimwear on public beaches and no alcohol, so need to make sure you are good with that,

Mostly people to to resort islands, where sharia law has been relaxed. Basically you go to that island and all that's on that island is the hotel and it's guests. That's the more typical Maldives experience and you can drink, wear swimwear etc,

Budget end, at this time if year will be close to 300 usd per night on average.

If you pick a guest house, remember also to factor in the cost of trips to go snorkelling etc. This can bump up the bill a lot,

Fishing trips as well as snorkelling tips are arranged easily, not cheap, but remember you can't fish near the reefs, so it is further out in the deep blue,

As others have said, right now the issue is the fact you are going at probably the busiest times, so you need to see what is available,

It is risky and not recommended booking flights into the Maldives without accommodation booked.

Obviously at this stage you may not get what you want/wish so you will need be flexible....

Others have suggested some good advice so these are good pointers to start your search ....

ive always wondered what accommodation would be left available for the Xmas period if someone left it to 2 weeks to go. You must tell us all what you actually get

I am still here. Thanks for the suggestions. I am still looking and even more desperately so now. I suppose we got taken by the cheap air tickets on a full service airline (usd300 return).

Even the mid range resorts are out of the question now. Even if we are willing to pay the premium, there is no availability.

So, at the end of the day, howevr it turns out, this will be a good lesson. I know there is no comparison but 6 days in Maldives is the equivalent of spending two months in say Nepal, like for like.

I am now looking at guesthouses at local islands.

I will keep you all updated on what happens. Good for everybody else to know. Thanks for all your time.
