Mirihi vs W Retreat & Spa

Hello

We are spending 10 days honeymoon in Maldives next month and we have actually booked Mirihi WV (cancelable) but are now also looking at W Retreat & Spa. We stayed at Hilton Iru Fushi before and really liked it, but the house reef was not fantastic. Would like to be able to snorkel and see lovely fishes etc and even turtles. ^_^

Any suggestions, opinions on these 2 resorts? Other than the price difference. We would actually prefer beach villa as we like to have the sun beds on the sandy beach..

Thanks for any reply!

I think you could have people queuing up to get your Mirihi WV off you if you cancel it! I haven't been to W but Mirihi is a great option for a honeymoon. It's a lovely, quiet island with excellent food and very special service - they will try to do anything you ask "as long as it is legal" -and they specialise in mind-reading! The reef is excellent.

They both have excellent reefs in terms of healthy corals and abundant marine life. Villas are much bigger and more luxurious at the W, but the island is more developed and not as quiet as Mirihi. I really preferred the atmosphere (and food) at Mirihi, as the W focuses more on the 5-star luxury resort ambiance rather than embracing the Maldives. That being said, the W does have a large wow factor if that is what you are looking for.

worlds apart . I have been to both ... a dozen times to mirihi and once to W . those numbers express how I feel about the two islands .

mirihi is all about casual elegance and relaxed luxury . you are spoiled and looked after every step you take on the island . the service is out of this world .. so is the food and the entire athmosphere. it is very quiet , however and privacy is big.

W is all about "trying too hard" for my personal taste . its stuffed full of villas like manhatten in the Maldives ..the villas are full of utterly useless gadgets . the athmoshere is noisy since there is music blaring out of every bush to rival with your villa neighbor's bose systems. for a few days I literally found myself between a neighbor playing trance music all day and one trending wagner. I was ready to poison someone's curry a few hours into that cacophony ! W is trying really hard for a 90's south beach flair without realizing that even south beach has moved on since . there are way too many motorized watersports taking place to create a calm , relaxed athmosphere . privacy is poor . having said that ... I loved the "sweet spots" but detested most of the food ("you want me to pay WHAT for THIS???" I pay for quality without batting an eyelash but W food left me very "meh" as a rule) .

both resorts have very good reefs .. the W one is much more damaged in the upper regions (down to 15 feet or so) , due to overuse by this incredible number of guests stuffed on a tiny island . both have good dive sites around it , if you are a diver ... mirihi's dive center is miles ahead in service and convenience.

Only been to W out of the two, if you prefer beach villa, W beach villas are having some concrete path at the beach, personally don’t like it much (i enjoyed my stay at W water villa though).

Hi

No contest Mirihi every time The water bungalows at W always remind me of battery hen houses strung out across the sea dreadful place

Another vote for Mirihi ..... Only you can decide if it is too quiet for you as opposes to W.

Mirihi had 4 beach villas - there is nothing stopping you checking if any if these are available if you prefer a beach villa ...

Like Frequent T, I enjoyed my stay at the W. I don't think it looks nearly as bad on the island as it does from the air. There are too many water villas in the lagoon, but the island itself is still very beautiful unlike the Centaras which have packed their island with beach villas and buildings. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

its second to the centaras for sure ... but .. yeah , it does look as bad on the island as from the air .. every bit as bad . its very claustrophobic and the formerly gorgeous island fesdu has been razed completely beyond recognition , sadly . having said that .. the rooms are nice , except for their lack of privacy and the noise pollution and the reef is still better than many others

I wouldn't say the island was razed, as a lot of the natural vegetation was preserved. If you take out the water villa jetty, the actual island itself is actually not that densely constructed compared to other islands. Only 28 villas and a lower room density than Conrad or Athuruga, for example. I would say the only thing that has been ruined is the view of the lagoon from the main beach. I think that imposing water villa jetty is really the main source of the negative comments towards the W.

my bad , jp . the original fesdu resort used to be a favorite of mine .. so I am comparing it to the island that used to stand there . trust me .. its is shocking just how little of the vegetation was left .

this used to be the villas kiernans.de/photogallery/Fesdhu/DSCB0001.JPG and this the overall island kiernans.de/photogallery/Fesdhu/DSC00132.JPG imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/fesdu.jpg/ ... this is the status quo …wikimapia.org/p/00/03/64/53/34_full.jpg

however ... comparisons like mine are personal and probably not fair ...
