Advice - booked to centara in April & looking for any tips?

Hello all,

We are a family of 4 booked to Centara Grand for 8 nights in April. Boys will be 12 and 10 by then. We are book into a family water villa and intend to snorkel and snorkel some more as the boys are great swimmers. Hubby and I have been to the maldives years ago prior to having the kids but this is our first visit with the boys. We are so excited. Hope to go on some trips with a view to seeing as much as we can underwater without the scuba diving. Hubby and I were diving last time but think we will stick to snorkelling this time. Have booked Centara for the reef and accessibility to the family water villa. Fortunate to have Island Club upgrade included. Any advice greatly appreciated for this trip. We are flying from the UK but travelling via Dubai for a few days en route. Flying back to Uk direct with BA. We would really welcome advice on Centara, Kids in the Maldives. seaplane transfers (personally I am totally dreading this as I hate hate hate flying due to a bad experience as a child in a 2 seater light aircraft! but kids are really looking forward to it which is fortunate) and/or snorkelling advice. Am intending to buy the boys semi decent snorkel equipment to take as its very important to me they enjoy the sea life experience.

Would really welcome and advice on any aspects of the trip. Any included tours to do? Airport advice? Snorkelling? Centara? Is it likely we will see whale sharks?

Thanks so so much.

april is a bit early in the season for whale sharks but there are some in residence year round . your resort will know when there have been sightings and will run whale shark snorkel trips when there is a decent chance of an encounter.

Get down to your nearest dive shop/underwater specialist and get fitted properly for masks. Don't just buy off the shelf. The mask is the most important part of the snorkelling equipment. Get that bit right and you'll be sorted.

Lovely - thanks. I gave a visit to the local dive shop planned. A leaky mask is a nightmare! Do we need fins do you think? And will the kids benefit from a snorkel vest? They are both amazing swimmers, much better than me.

you definitely need fins .. even around your villa you get around much easier and safer with fins . if you go on the whale shark tour or any snorkeling excursion , you get pretty much let off the ship in the deep water , sometimes in current . trying to enjoy that without fins is pretty much impossible , nevermind dangerous.

snorkel vest for floatation ? no decent swimmer needs that . they are just an hindrance .. but wearing a big tshirt or rash vest is good to prevent sunburn

Thats great advice thanks. I had kind of decided against taking fins to save on luggage but I will certainly sort these out for the kids at least. Rash vests are sorted - I always make the kids wear these on holiday as there is nothing more miserable than sunburn but I'm also sorting for us grown ups too. I remember from last time that you spend so long in the water no suncream can possibly last that long and I ended up with a burnt upper back and also the backs of my legs (blush!).

Not a popular island with many on here, but I have to say we ended up there at the last minute when Komandoo closed for refurb in 2012 and we had to change islands at the last minute.........and we absolutely loved it!

you say the kids are better swimmers than you .... as a less than strong swimmer, you need fins even more to be safe

Thanks Babs - thats reassuring. I have noticed that there is quite lot of negativity about Centara but we are very much looking forward to it and it seems to suit our needs perfectly so fingers crossed.
