Reef at Athuruga

We are planning a trip for July 15 (ages away!) to Athuruga, well that's the one we have narrowed it don't to for now!

With regards the reef, is it far out from the beach and how strong is the current, especially in July? I have snorkelled before but like to be close enough to the beach so as not to feel too out of my depth. Will Athuruga be ok?

It is the best and easiest reef I have ever snorkelled. Easy access, close to shore and most times very calm. Perfect

The reef is not far from the beach at all, it's very easy accessible and no currents that we noticed. It's wonderful, lucky you :-)

Very close to the beach and not a lot of current. The best reef I've ever been.

In places the reef is close to the beach. However you should be aware that if you're on the far side of the reef (i.e. the ocean side) there are only a few cut throughs to get back into the lagoon. You shouldn't try to snorkel over the top of the reef to get back in as there can be little if any clearance over the coral

Dear Mrs Karen G,

Thank you for your interest in Diamonds Athuruga Beach and Water Villas, and thank you as well to all the other guests who have made positive comments.

Our reef is indeed but a few meters away from the beach, and also directly accessible from the steps of our Water Villas. There are small channels that allow easy access through the reef, from the shallow sandy lagoon to the deeper part, where a large variety of sea life can be found on any given day. Just this morning we had a couple of large Manta Rays "escorting" one of our boats just off shore.

We provide high quality equipment, free snorkelling lessons, guided snorkelling trips on the reef, and flotation aids for the weaker swimmers. Our staff are fully trained and know the reef very well, and are always on hand to advise on where to go.

The currents and state of the sea depend on the season and the tide, but unless the weather is really bad, (a rare occurrence) one can snorkel everyday, inside the lagoon and / or over the reef. The advantage of a resort island which is inside the reef barrier.

If you, or any reader, need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at info.athuruga@diamonds-resorts.com

I look forward to welcoming you in person, and to introducing you to our small piece of paradise, both above and under the water.

Thank you again and very sincerely,

Stephen
