Budget accommodation

Is it possible to find budget accommodation in the different atolls around the maldives ? is it easy to move between the islands, find reasonable accommodation and then do some great diving ?

For budget accommodation, have a look at Biyadhoo, Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo, Embudu, Fihalhohi, Eriyadu... Maybe Vilamendhoo comes in budget if you choose a garden/beach bungalow. It's not very easy (or cheap) to move between islands. You need a speedboat or seaplane. Better to stay put on one island :)

Budget and moving around in the Maldives really dont go together in the same sentence. Best stay put if money is tight. Biyadhoo is budget and has a brilliant reef and a very reasonable dive operation

no . for that you have to take a 500$ seaplane to the ari atoll (vilamendhoo, madoogali , maayafushi, etc are the budget resorts there )

So would you recommend a liveaboard ?

I don't know the atols, are the central atols any good for manta action ?

When are you thinking of going as this does have a bearing? You stand a chance of seeing mantas in the Guraidhoo channel (South Male atoll which is central) May to October but there are no guarantees! South Ari atoll is fairly central too (just west of North and South Male atolls) and is perhaps the best atoll for a balance of fish and coral - its certainly recognised as one of the best dive spots but most atolls will offer access to at least one signature site.

You could always look at guest house accomodation on a locally inhabited island as long as you are aware of the restrictions that brings - no alcohol or pork, restricted areas where swimwear can be worn and a much less pristine enviroment - it won't be like the brochure pictures. These are reached by local ferry but be prepared to spend the day transferring and travel on a Friday will be restricted.

If your main reason for going is diving and you have a small budget( by Maldives standard, which is not small......) perhaps a liveaboard would fit the bill.
