Hi,
you can go out on one of the large catamarans that operate from the beach, just for a motor launch ride on the sea, around the Negombo Lagoon or along the river/canal route.
There may well be other trips you can do but those 4 I know of.
We did one trip a few weeks ago. Climbed aboard the boat in front of ther Oasis Hotel. ( near Browns beach ). travelled a couple of miles further up the coast, entered through a river estauary, scraping over the sand banks, then spent a couple of hours on the river and a canal.
Lots of bird life and a few big monitors as well Also went ashore to see a toddy tapper at work and to visit an illegal arrack stil , in the bush.
We paid 3000 rupees ( about #18 ) for 4 of us, direct to the boat owner who we found just by asking around on the beach.
Usually at the weekend , in the afternoons, when all the locals come to the beach, there's a couple of boats operating next to the breakwater in front of Browns hotel. Just doing trips out on the sea.
For the lagoon, go into Negombo town and find the lagoon bridge. It's a nice area to wander around as hundreds of colourful fishing boats moor up there and it makes for great photo opportunities. Ask any of the fishermen there and they should point you to someone.
If you like sailing, then one of the big catamarans will be a good trip. They are usually working withing a couple of miles of the shore catching prawns but there's one , usually pulled up on the beach just north og Browns with an advert for trips painted on the sails, which they leave up all day even though that boat is beached.
Rod.
thanks rod i will go on a couple of boat trips while there as fairly cheap and will pass an hour or two.will get a tuk tuk or taxi to that bridge to see the wonderfull fishing boats how much should we expect to pay in tuk tuk or taxi from browns to the bridge.
HI Chelsea,
Tuk tuk should cost you 200 rupees. They'll almost certainly ask for more but just be prepared to say " gana redi " which means , too expensive. Then walk to the next tuk tuk and try him.
While you're in the vicinity of the bridge, if you walk across you're on the lagoon island. It's a pleasant walk over there , where tourists don't go.
Also, 7 or 8 minutes walk away from the town side of the bridge is the huge beach fish market. Quite an eye opener. Very colourful, very interesting and very smelly.
Going back to your previous post. regarding is drink avalable. No, it isn't . these are working boats with the fishermen or boatmen making a little extra income.
Far better than a purpose made tourist carrier.
Rod.
can't wait Nay, the Tuk Tuk should be fun and that Lagoon Island sounds good, i like places where not many tourists go and a photographers paradise also
