Waikkal to weligama/galle whale watching and dolphins

How far would it be from club hotel dolphin in Waikkal to go to Galle/weligama? Have read that there is a place there called Mirissa that employs/trains locals to learn about tourism industry and 'gives back to the community'. We are going to arrive in Sri Lanka on 21st July and currently looking at where to visit. Would this trip be feasible or would an overnight stay locally be needed - has anyone done this trip and who could arrange it? thanks for help... there are five of us..

Hi there,

Quite some info on

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293961-i8983-k236…

As the boats leave early morning for best results, and Waikkal to Weligama/Mirissa is 5-6 hours one way, it's really better to do this as a trip with overnight stay.

Inquire well about the chances of sights, though. First months of the year is 'the season' it seems and summer less chances there. But other whale-watch ports are supposed to be under development, e.g. Panadura (much closer to Waikkal) and Trincomalee on the east coast esp. in summer. So maybe those would be alternatives...

All the best,

Hi,

During this period Whale watching is not operating from Mirissa due to the rough sea. May be end of October or early in November they will start again.

You could arrange this tours through Walkers tours a reputed tiur company in Sri Lanka.

You do not nessessairly need to book through a tour operator. It is easy to go there directly befor 7 am and to participate if operating. For more information about the organization you mentioned look at www.mirissawatersports.com.

Thanks everyone for your help - we will look into this further - have visited the mirissa website and it looked so lovely - shame the weather will be against us.
