Travels in Sri Lanka next weekend!

Hi,

We have just booked up to go to sri lanka on Friday 28 Aug, and are planning to do the followng:

airport to kandy

stay in kandy 3 nights and from here:

day 1 - tooth relic, explore kandy

day 2 - visit Sigiriya, then on the way back Dambulla

day 3 - pinnewella (or maybe fit this into day 1 or 2)

day 4 - then travel via Nuwara Eilya & Horton Plains (and other areas around here) to Burwela where we are for rest of hols.

Does this sound about right timings-wise? And also would it be better to hire driver for duration of the 3 days in kandy and then to take us to beruwela?

We have budgeted for 7000 rupees x 2 for both airport trips - does this sound right? And then does anyone know costs for driver for Sigiriy & Dambulla and then from kandy via Nuwara Eilya & HP, etc to Burwela?

Any comments would be welcome!

Hi Claire,

Yes the airport transfer pricing is about right. It's based on Rs 55-60 per km, the one-way price.

You're not telling how long you plan the trip from Kandy to Beruwala; I'd say at least 3 days (2 nights) if you want to enjoy Horton Plains. Btw, Haputale and Ella are better bases to explore that area than Eliya itself which is nice for a few bours.

Transport with driver is indeed best, could even hire him from Airport until Beruwala as you need to pay for a 'roundtrip' anyhow - so also the empty ride from Beruwala to his starting point, either Kandy or Airport. And Airport-Kandy then becomes cheaper, around Rs 4,500 instead of Rs 7,000.

For overall cost, use

srilankatourism.org.uk/lang/en/traveller/dis…

to calculate the distance of your route and then multiply by Rs 40 per km. That's the target price for roundtrips. Don't forget to add the 'empty ride' at the end too.

All the best,

Hi,

Great thanks for that.

We were planning to set off from Kandy on the morning of day 4 and go via Horton Plains etc in that one day and arrive at Berwela in the evening where we will be located for the other 10 days or so.

Does this sound feasible - although now I'm thinking maybe just 2 nights in Kandy and 1 night in Nuwara Eliya or around that area - can anyone advise of hotels in the area. The Tea Factory looks nice and sounds a good experience, but too far out for us?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Claire

Hi again Claire,

Not not feasible. Kandy - Ella - Coast - Galle - Beruwala is about 10 hours by car, and Horton Plains walking takes 2-3 hours at least!

Better on day 4 do Kandy - Horton Plains and then back to Eliya. Tea Factory _is_ lovely and about 8 km out of town, which is 30 mins extra drive. If you want to stay centrally in town, St. Andrews is our favourite despite being only 2 star; the vintage charm compensates for much. But Haputale or Ella would be better if you don't want to backtrack; that area has no serious hotels but enough of clean guesthouses, like Ambiente.

Thanks for that! Think I'm sorted - I better be, we fly Thursday lunchtime!

Does this sound better:

day 1 - tooth relic, explore kandy (& probably pinnewella)

day 2 - visit Sigiriya, then on the way back Dambulla

day 3 - travel to Eliya Nuwara (stopping off at kitulgala for lunch) or any other suggestions welcome)

day 4 - travel from eliya to Horton Plains & ella & end up in the evening at berwela

do you think this is feasible?

Thanks for the tip on the hotel, will have a look at them tonight and decide.

Looks like you have some good advice concerning your itinerary so nothing to add there. I just wondered what you are doing about accommodation. You mention the Tea factory, which is a good hotel and not too far out if you end up hiring a car and driver, so I assume you want to stay in hotels rather than guest houses. If this is the case, you should really book accommodation before you leave as you are likely to get a much better deal than just turning up as individual tourists. At this late stage, Asia Rooms might be a good starting point or you could try Red Dot Tours. Have a great holiday.

Yes, this is a feasible schedule more or less. Day 4 is still full but doable; I'd suggest to do Horton Plains on the afternoon of day 3. Also on day 3 Kitulgala is a bit off the best route; Kandy-Ramboda Falls - Eliya is a more beautiful route taking only 3 hours. So if you leave late enough after B'fast could lunch at Ramboda Falls, but could also do so in Eliya itself before continuing to Horton Plains which is about 90 mins from Eliya. This leaves you to only a 6-7 hour's drive on day 4 without needing to spend extra hours for walking on Horton Plains.

All the best again,

Thanks again for the comments.

Yes, we are going to book before we go (tonight/tomorrow!).

Route from Kandy to Eliya sounds a better one, we will do that thanks. Although just reading up on the train from Kandy to nr Eliya - would anyone recommend this?

On another note (whether we get driver/train), i'm thinking that maybe we can't fit in both Ella and Horton Plains - is there one you would chose over other? And which way is best if we can Eliya - Ella - HOrton or Eliya - HOrton - Ella?

Thanks so much!

Hi again,

You'll pass by Ella on your preferred route to the south ANYway, see the map. Horton Plains is a 10 km detour on that route, to the entrance that is. Of course really seeing HP is a few hours extra.

Train Kandy to Eliya is 6-7 hours, car is 2.5 to 3 hours (partly caused by using a longer route). So in your overloaded plans, hmmmmm :-(

Hi,

Visiting pinnawela on the way to Kandy from the airport will save a lot of time. Will depend on your arrival time and mood (jet lag etc.) though.

It is raining there up in the hills these days. So it will take longer than usual for traveling and sight seeing etc.

I do it as follows.

Arrival- *Pinnawela on the way to kandy.

(Kandy overnight)

Day 1 - Around kandy. Botanical garden and kandyan

dancing in the eve.

(Kandy overnight)

Day 2 - To Sigiriya and Dambulla.

(Kandy overnight)

Day 3 - Nuwaraeliya (HP and around)

(NE overnight)

Day 4 _ Leave for Bentota via Ella.

Enjoy your trip,

chan.
