February holiday to celebrate 50th birthday

Hi

Hoping TA can weave its usual magic and that someone can help as my planning time is very short. My partner is turning 50 at the end of Feb and has very recently told me that he would like to go away. Unfortunately, we will only have about 10 to 12 days at the most and want advice as to what we could see in this time and the best way to organise it given how close it is. To make it even more difficult, he wants at least 4 days or so of relaxation at a beach. I would like to organise somewhere very special to stay on his actual birthday. All help appreciated!

Hi Kazbern,

Nicest is to have a build-up towards the B'day and then the R & R period afterwards. So in Lanka that would be 7-8 days touring and then 4 days beach. In a week you can cover the main inland areas: Cultural Triangle, Kandy area and Hill country.

For a ' special' place, look in the boutique direction more than in the standard hotels though e.g. Kandalama and Tea Factory are also quite exotic 'standard' hotels. www.boutiquesrilanka.com gives a reasonable overview. Really high-end luxury places we can think of are:

* Coast: Saman Villas Bentota, Adithiya Hikkaduwa, Aman* hotels in Galle and Weligama

* Inland: Vil Uyana Dambulla, Ceylon Tea Trails near Hatton

For organising, involve a specialised local operator and in this case one not linked to a hotel company. So e.g. Red Dot, Connaissance de Ceylon or Diethelm or even smaller ones like Paragon. These arrange the acco and a car-with-driver.

All the best,

Oops, forgot one more very upmarket inland hotel: Elephant Corridor, just like Vil Uyana in the Dambulla-Sigiriya sector. Must be because I just turned 50 ;-) but we celebrated that on a Caribbean mountain ridge...

All the best,

I agree, let a local agency do the work for you and the one I would recommend is Red Dot Tours - very professional and good on the price front too. Just tell them what you want to do and give them a budget and they will come up with a package for you. Have a look at their website as it is the best in terms of details on properties in SL.

Most people go for a tour and beach combination. For the tour best to concentrate on the cultural triange around Kandy and perhaps the Tea Country. Five or six days should do it and then the rest of the time on the beach.

My top place for the birthday would be Tea Trails but you would need two nights to really savour it - fairly expensive but worth it - the best of its type in the world. Castlereagh Bungalow is probably the nicest. Alternatives would be Heritance Kandalama (in cultural Triangle) or a beach villa, as recommended previously.

Have a Happy Birthday.

Hi,

There is a new high-end luxury place with 24h butler service in Wadduwa - Serene Pavilions (http://www.serenepavilions.com/).

I was 50 this Christmas and have been spoiled by all. My Mum paid for a fab 3 day trip to Brussels, from where we did a day hop into Cologne in Germany and then next Thursday we are off to Sri Lanka. Im so excited, its come around so quickly since we booked in the autumn. We have booked through Reddot, who have been very good. I just hope our flight isnt affected by this snow, Heathrow doesnt seem to be suffering as much as Gatwick at the mo. I must check my paperwork and find out (or email reddot) to find out the procedure when we arrive, will our driver be waiting for us with a little sign with our name on it or is there a reddot desk?

Your Red Dot driver will be there with a board, just after the point where you collect your baggage and past the money changers on the left. You continue out of the exit and the drivers wait there.

Have fun!!

Red Dot also usually tell you the name of your driver and if you go to their webiste there is a page with photos of the drivers so you can identify him when you get to the hall where they are waiting. In my experience they are always punctual.
