Travelling times

How long would it take to go from Waikkal to Habarana by car?

Also Habarana to Kandy. And I know Kandy to Mirrisa is a long way but are there any recommended stops on the way to view waterfalls or scenic views?Would it be possible to stop at Haputale or is that too out the way? Finally what time would it take from Mirrisa to the airport? Thanks for any answers.

Hi there,

Selfservice ;-) Use a site like

srilankatourism.org.uk/lang/en/traveller/dis…

and take 30-40 km/h as a yardstick. For 'airport' in this specific site use Negombo instead, and for Mirissa use the average between Matara and Galle.

Kandy-Mirissa: the Haputale road instead of the Ella road is a detour of maybe 2 x 10 km so feasible if an hour extra is no disaster for you. Plenty of scenic views, on Kandy-Eliya and also Eliya-south (either at Ella or at Haputale).

All the best,

When we travelled from Habarana to Kandy we stopped at Dambulla Caves on the way (also a spice garden). We left our hotel in Habarana at about 9am and arrive in Kandy at about 1.30pm (including our stops along the way).

Hope this helps. You can read about our experiences from Habarana to Kandy at www.my-sri-lankan-holiday-truths.com

Good luck

Here are approximate distances by road:

Waikkal to Habarana is 185 Km

Habarana to Kandy is about 100 Km

Kandy to Mirissa is about 220 Km Not including detour to Haputale

Mirissa to Airport is about 180 Km

As Erik says calculate on between 30 to 40 Km per hour depending on traffic and road conditions which are not consistent, hence the failrly wide estimate.

In total you could be looking at up to 24 hours of travelling time for these journeys - that's a hell of a lot of games of I-Spy!

Good luck,

David.

Hi

Waikkal to Habarana by car will take you around 3.5 hours. And Habarana to Kandy is 2 hours or just over, but you may well stop on the way, either to see Dambulla which is virtually at the start of your journey from Habarana, or possibly at a spice garden (although I would press on and not bother with the latter...)

From Kandy, it's pretty much a full day's drive to Ella or Haputale, bearing in mind you will stop to see waterfalls, tea plantations, a tea factory or outlet, and all the views along the way. Ramboda Falls Hotel is a nice place to stop for a cup of tea or snack on the way, as it has fabulous views of the waterfall of the same name and there's a fabulous viewpoint from the Hindu Hanuman temple nearby too (also at Ramboda). Either Ella or Haputale would be ideal for a stopover before heading south to Mirissa.

I have not done Mirissa to the airport in one go, but it will take you around 5-6 hours by car, depending on traffic.
