Safe excursions and recomended drivers.

I have received 2 quotes for a 4 day trip i plan on doing in sri lanka.

One quote was from a driver recommended by one of the great DE on this site, whilst one and the cheapest came from a private message i received after mentioning excursions on the forums. I know that there are dangers in following these type of recommendations.

the dearer quote for the following itinerary

Day 1- Sigiriya .

>

> On this day, we will drive to Sigiriya,

. En route, a visit to the

> Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage would be taken. In the late afternoon, we will

> climb the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya,

>

> Over night stay at sigiriya. (http://www.thilankaresortandspa.com

> -SIGIRIYA or ttp://www.pelweheraresort.com -SIGIRIYA )

>

> Day 2: Sigiriya (Polonnaruwa & Dambulla).

>

> We will make our way to visit Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka from the 10th to 13th century.

>

> After lunch, we will visit mineyira national park to search for wild

> elephant .

> Over night stay at sigiriya (http://www.thilankaresortandspa.com

> -SIGIRIYA

>

>

>

> Day 3: Sigiriya - Kandy.

>

> Kandy is the next stop on this day, about 3hours' drive away. At 500m

> above sea level, Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. We go to

> the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the sacred tooth of Buddha. We

> will also enjoy a tour around Kandy, with its cool climate and

> bustling town centre. The National Museum and the shrines around Kandy

> are also places of interests that will be visited. on the way we will

> stop at herbal garden and dambulla cave teple. In the evening after

> dinner, enjoy a cultural show featuring the various dances of Sri Lanka.

>

> Over night stay at kandy. http://www.thilankahotel.com - KANDY

> or http://www.srilankasenaniholdings.com -KAMDY

>

> Day 4: -kandy -Nuwara Eliya-kaluthara.

the cost of this with a guy called Karnal de silva for 2 of us with accommodation was just under $500.

Mr De Silva seems above board and there are many recommendations for him (some are slightly suspicious however). Is there any website where a drivers credentials can be checked out for example.

The other quote i have was for just over $570 from a driver called Rehana Jaleel, similar excursion and similar hotels etc.

Does anyone have any experience with these 2 drivers. They have both been very helpful to me.

Hi there,

Hard to judge the prices as you don't specify whether the hotels are HB or BB basis and whether there are entrance fees included. Small mistake in the quote: Thilanka hotel is in Dambulla (southern end, Matale road), 45 mins away from Sigiriya. But if they take care of the extra km's no big trouble for you.

A rough estimate of what this should cost HB basis without entrance fees (don't know these drivers and no there is no central website, check whether they have all Tourist Board licenses with them):

* 3 nights acco in 3-star hotel @ USD 60 for a double, USD 180

* Distance (KTara - Cultural Triangle - Kandy - Eliya - Hatton - Kalutara) 1000 km @ 0.30 dollar (Rs 35), USD 300

So then the price quoted, if it's really all-in for 2 persons, is not bad...

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Okay, then the conclusion stands: fair price is around 480-500 USD.

You can finetune the target distances travelled by using websites like

srilankatourism.org.uk/lang/en/traveller/dis…
