train ride in Sri Lanka

Hi - have booked at Club Palm Bay for a week in Feb and would be interested in arranging a scenic train ride for one day whilst there. Any clues what would be a good route and how we could arrange that? Would like to go through scenic inland areas ideally, no particular destination in mind, more to enjoy the journey.

Where would be best place to start from do you think?

many thanks for any advice

Hi Sue,

The most scenic train rides are in the hill country - Kandy to Badulla with Nanu Oya to Badulla being the most scenic part.

That is quite far away from Marawila and will require minimum 2 days/1 night.

Yes, the beach resorts are a long way from the Hill Country, which has the most scenic route and trains are slow. You would need to first get yourself to Colombo and then on a train into the hills.

Here is a link to the official Sri Lankan Railways website:

Look at the Colombo Badulla line.

There is a weekend train that leaves Colombo at 08.35 gets to Nanu Oya at 14.10. The train back from Nanu Oya is at 15.15 and arrives back in Colombo at 21.00. Not a journey I would want to make for all its scenic beauty and then you have to get to Colombo in the morning and back to your hotel at night. Definitely needs at night's stopover in Nuwara Eliya, in my opinion.
