Train bookings in December

I wanted to book train tickets from columbo to kandy on the intercity express in late December, ideally in 1st class or the observation car.

Could someone confirm how i would secure the tickets at this busy time of year when we only fly in the day before?

I understand that tickets are available from the ticket office from 10 days prior to journey but worried that these tickets will be sold out?

Is there anyway of prebooking etc?

Thanks in advance

Andrew:-)

Hi Andrew,

Tickets can only be booked in person (or by an agent) from Colombo Fort Railway Station from 10 days prior to departure.

Hi hans

Thanks for a quick reply, how do the agents work in terms of collection, fees etc?

Do you know of any reliable agents?

Are intending to hire a driver? Then he should be able to do it for you.

Where do you intend to stay the first night?

I have no personal experience, but I would guess that any travel agent, e.g. Jetwing, Walkers, Diethelm, Red Dot, will do it for a fee.

Yes, difficult to do if you do not have someone to buy the ticket for you. On the Intercity train from Colombo to Kandy all the seats have to be booked. The Observation Car is the only First Class carriage and there are about 24 seats. The rest of the train is Second Class, again with booked seats. Honestly, not much difference between the two, except in the Observation Carriage you travel backwards and there is a large window facing down the track but this is not much of an advantage if you are three or more rows back. This carriage is also pretty bouncy and so not for those prone to travel sickness.

Obviously, Second Class tickets are more plentiful but you cannot guarantee getting these if you just turn up on the day. As suggested you will need to ask your tour operator to do this for you, if you have one.

There are other trains to Kandy but these are slower, more crowded and less comfortable, with no First Class and no bookable seats.

David.
