Train Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Hi all

We would like to take the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya during our trip to Sri Lanka, the Seat61.com website has only got one train a day at 3.30 am but several forum threads mention a 8.55 train which would be easier!!

Has anyone caught this train recently?

Thanks

Hi,

The trains from Colombo to upcountry (Badulla) do not go to Kandy. You will have to take the train from Peradeniya station - about 7 km from Kandy - to Nanu Oya - about 8 km from Nuwara Eliya.

There are 2 daily trains - departing Peradeniya at 08:40 and 12:23.

Yep. It leaves from Peradeniya (a suburb), not Kandy. See www.railway.gov.lk for the timetables.

Hi,

If you're in Kandy and want to catch the Peradeniya to Nanu Oya train, you can still get a train from Kandy.

Leaves Kandy 08:25 .. arrives Peradeniya 08:30..

Just that 5 miute train ride to connect to the Hill country train which goes through Peradeniya at 08:40, arrives Nanu Oya at 12:27.

I;ve caught that train from Peradeniya , a dozen or so times and in my experience, it's usually a bit late.

If you're staying in Kandy the night before, you can get to Peradeniya station by taxi, tuk tuk or local bus but the trafic at that time of the day is usually really choked up.

Best to take the shuttle train from Kandy.

Rod.

Thank you so much for prompt replies! That all makes more sense now!

Will it be easy to get a taxi from Sigirya hotel to Peradiniya to catch the train?

Thanks again

Yes, there will likely be taxis waiting outside the hotel, bu better arrange the day before.

It will mean leaving Sigiriya 6 AM, morning rush hour traffic around Dambulla and Kandy can be quite dramatic. So either take the later train from Peradeniya or sacrifice quite a lot of sleep and breakfast luxury...

We were going to get the train but due to not being able to guarantee a seat we decided to go by mini bus.

That was the best decision we have ever made in 20 years of travelling.

The road jouney over the mountains into the tea country is mesmerising and you are Able to stop for loads of photo ops on route.

We also toured the lochmuir tea plantation (brilliant, informative and free) stopped to view tea pickers, waterfalls and beautiful vistas.

Last time I looked trains don't stop and cannot imagine it being a better journey.

Hope this helps andrew

How do you book the minibus? Did it cost much and did you share it? Can you stay in Nuwara Eliya and return next day?

The cost for the minivan, whether for one or 2 days, on this route would be around 2 x 120 x Rs 45 makes Rs 10,800. (Net distance Eliya-Kandy is around 105 km but allow for a few detours to e.g. plantation). A stay overnight in Eliya is of course possible; pick a more upmarket guesthouse or any hotel, that way you are sure that they have a driver's quarter and then no extra cost for the driver.

Any Kandy hotel/guesthouse, and the tuktuk drivers too, have contacts to arrange these tours for you.

We paid 11,000 which Is spot on Eriks costing.

Stops along the way included visiting tea factory and scenic spots along the road as you go, brilliant brilliant journey.

We even met a gentleman on the roadside next to plantation dressed In gold lamai waistcoat (and gold tooth) doing magic tricks, very bizarre!

Have a good trip:-)
