is it cheaper also to use this local telephone network to call europe

Hi Robert,

Using a local SIM is cheaper both for local calls and calls to Europe. Local SIM cards are cheap (LKR 200-300) or even free.

I reckon Dialog is the best network, but there are other reputable networks, e.g. Mobitel and Etisalat.

Dialog has a shop at the airport.

Avoid scratch cards, 'direct top-up' (tell your number to shop and pay and they do by using special SMS/calls) is safer and quicker. If you still have to resort to scratch cards,

a) Top up close to the shop. Some scamming shops/staff use UV/X-ray like devices to 'steal' the codes on the cards so that what you are sold will proof useless when trying to activate.

b) Make pretty sure no one looks over your shoulder when scratching. Cases have been reported of (local) travellers scratching in a packed bus or train, being interrupted by a call, and 1 minute later trying to activate. Hearing upon filing a complaint that 30 seconds before someone else had used that code to activate HIS balance, from a physical location quite close to theirs ;-)

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
