Phones and Touring

Hi

We are off to Sri Lanka in a week or so, a few days touring and a week on the beach, really cant wait now!

It is an escorted tour (from Kuoni). I have read a fair bit about scams, in small temples and "botanical" gardens etc. so will look out for these, but would our escort advise us about these, or, being cynical, are they paid to deliver tourists to the scammers?

Also, is it easy to pick up a local mobile SIM card at the airport?

Thanks!

Dave

Hi Dave....

Yes, easy to pick up a local sim card from the aiport, there is a Dialog shop there at arrivals..., make sure your mobile is unlocked to accept any sim..

Possible that your tour escort may explain potential scams, but be wary that they themselves maybe making from such stops/places..., epsecially spice gardens, shops ect....

Thank for your reply Dave!

I had looked at the Global SIM cards, but seem complicated and more expensive than the local option.

Best be on your guard a little, seesm to be the order of the day. All adds to the experience though.

Looking at the weather, I am thinking waterproofs too! We will be in Bentota 1st week in August :)

Cheers

Don't confuse the well known "Botanical" gardens at Peradeniya (Kandy) with the many "Spice" or "Herbal" gardens. The former is a delightful place to visit whereas the spice gardens are, indeed, a rip off.

Agree with Dave, in that some drivers do want take you to places like these because they stand to make good commissions if you buy anything. Be wary of gem factories and similar places also and don't feel pressurised to buy things you don't want to.

Hi again Dave...

Waterproofs??, unlikely to be honest, August is not that bad, in fact usually quite nice...

Up to date weather for Bentota can be found here.........

Re. weather first week in August... it SHOULD be mainly good in Bentota with lots of sunshine. You cannot ever rule out a rainy day, but most of the rain which falls in August is confined to late afternoon/evening times.

Don't bother with waterproofs. It's far too hot to wear them in Sri Lanka. It's best to invest in a cheap umbrella locally if you catch a downpour. The locals use them to keep off the rain and as a sunshade alternately!

I agree with Susie on this, last thing you want is any heavy clothes. Dress light and carry a small umbrella. I still use one I bought in Kandy some years ago when a downpour began and I ran into the nearest shop. I think it cost me under £1 but I always pack it and have it in my day bag.
