North Sri Lanka

Wondering if anyone has had any experience travelling to the north of Sri Lanka? The restrictions have been lifted now and seeing as i have two months i might go off and explore a little.

Whilst on the subject of the north, how's this for a plan? Train to Vavunia, (with bicycle), over night in Vav, cycle to Madhu, (maybe over night there), then cycle to Jaffna for a couple of days, via Kiliniochi. Then cycle/train back to the South before heading to Galle for a few days.I would appreciate any advice re accomodation N of Vav. and am I likely to be able to simply cycle to the N without any paper work?

PS Cycling in a OF ROAD RALEY is not a problem to me having cycled most of SL in recent years.

Hi Richard,

No paperwork needed indeed. Acco could be a problem; only heard of one army-run guesthouse in Kilinochi and then totally nothing until Jaffna. But like in any poorer rural area in Lanka, there's often the odd 'resthouse' to be found; cheap, not that clean but not really bad, and shared facilities. And Madhu at least should have a cheap Pilgrim's Rest, similar.

So maybe worth a try...

All the best,

Many thanks EricdR - pretty much as I anticipated. Hoping to go end of Jan - just need a three week pass from my Missus now.
