Flight arrives at 13:30 - How feasible is to catch ICE train

Hi,

As per above - we are arriving this Friday at 13:30 and ICE train leaves at 15:35. Are the queues on arrival at the airport long? Can we make the train to Kandy? How far from the airport is the train station?

Please advise. Thanks!

Hi,

The queues for immigration depends on how many flights are arriving around the same time. The longest wait is usually for you baggage. Count on minimum 45 mins to get out of the airport.

Mid afternoon I would count on minimum 1.5 hours from the airport to Colombo Fort, so 2 hours is cutting it too tight I'm afraid.

hello kacenka

limit time to catch kandy train because there is not direct train from airport to kandy (colombo airport to capital 30 km) ,you have to catch that train in colombo , ragama or weyangoda , i think you have chance get in weyangoda is the easy , you need a taxi from air port to weyangoda 23km ,train time around 16:20

cheers

Rohan,

Are you sure the ICE train is stopping at Veyangoda?

The train at 16.35 doesn't stop at veyangoda and ragama either.

Also as you are arriving on friday, do not go on this train as it would be VERY crowded (there are no seat reservations and friday afternoon is the busiest time slot of the week for long distance trains out of colombo) .

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, do you think bus would be a better option then? Is the train ride that much more scenic than a ride by a bus/car?

The train is more scenic than travelling by road - but only from Rambukkana to Peradeniya Junction.

Buses are more frequent, but you need to take a free shuttle bus from the airport terminal (far northeastern end of the pavement) to Katunayake bus stand to catch the bus to Kandy. Buses are not suited for large baggage.

Another advantage of the bus is that you do not go into Colombo city centre and head straight for the Kandy road. This will make the journey shorter and having just flown in, is your best option, in my opinion. Plenty of opportunity for scenic journeys later on.
