Anuradhapura or Pollonnaruwa?

Hi,

we plan to visit Sri Lanka for two weeks. And our itinerary was done by the travel agent. so they have include both Anuradhapura and pollonnaruwa. Is it worth to visit bothplaces or just one place out ofd that?

thank you,

Reka

Hi Reka,

Unless you're a total culture addict one will do. (Well in case of A'Pura better also include nextdoor Mihintale). Quite some overlap. Differences:

* P'ruwa is far more compact (all walkable), and has the cultural superior level (huge statues etc.). But it's 'museum atmosphere', mainly tourists and a few locals but no poojas etc.

* A'pura is spread out (4-5 car transfer needed between the spots, and one more to Mihintale). It's a lively devotional site, like Kataragama.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

As others are suggesting, the choice depends on what you prefer to see. For our family Polonaruwa is first choice and Mihintale next. Polonnaruwa has far more to see and is a pleasant place to walk around, has lots of historical importance, is less crowded . . . [ A licensed guide really adds to the experience.]

Our family has a Buddhist tradition but we, overseas living members, couldn't get past the trash left in Anuradhapura by the local worshippers. That was a turn off. Unfortunately we visited after a Poya Day.

Mihintale is really the birthplace of Buddhism, is also a lovely area to walk around with views over the area. So, some googling is recommended and there are many excellent blogs out there to give you some information to help with your decision. The rest of your itinerary inclusions may also influence your choice.

Have a great visit!

We were just in the area. Pollonnaruwa by far. It is fabulous and something out of movie. Anuradhapura was disappointing, a lot less to see.

if you have time to spare, then by all means, do both, they both deserve a visit.

but if you don't have enough time, and have to pick one, then Polonnaruwa for sure.
