Smokes and Beer...suggestions ?

I hope I dont fall foul of the brand name police...what's a good beer found all over the island ? I'm from Australia and am used to cold lager from the tap. Any suggestions about bottled beer ? Are smokes freely available ?

The most popular beer in Sri Lanka is Lion Lager. They come in 625 ml bottles.

Yes, cigarettes are free available.

Hi there....

You will find cold Lion Beer, along with Carlsberg and others on tap in some hotels/bars , mostly the larger ones, but in my opinion, not as good as the bottled variety..

Carlsberg I think is made by Lions but has a slightly different taste. They do come in 625 ml bottles. Smokes available at most places, even the wacky stuff.

Lion Lager is the beer of choice for most people, except some nouveau riche Sri Lankans who prefer Carlsberg because it sounds foreign (it isn't!)

The problem for me is that unlike you Aussies, Sri Lankans don't really seem to appreciate that in a climate like theirs the beer needs to be COLD!

By the time you get to the bottom of a 66ml bottle (standard size, which is good!) you have lukewarm beer (which isn't!) - and even the poshest hotels don't serve the beer ice cold to begin with!

Only once have I come across a place which has been resourceful enough to put those insulating jackets around the beer bottle - and that wasn't a bar, it was the excellent seafood restaurant Kamlo in Negombo!

And TravellerGuy is right - don't go near the draught (tap) Lion because it's nowhere near as good!

(I speak as a member of the Campaign for Real Ale in The UK, and hope that I know my beer!)
