is there a need for walking shoes in januari or sneakers ok?

Hi

I almost leave for a few weeks backpacking in sri lanka. i wil do the walk in hortons plain and visit ella a few days. Do I need real, firm walking boots or are sneakers also oke?

I like walking on my walking/mountain shoes but i will only wear them a few times and then have to carry them around all the time. I travel by bus and train. Becuase of the tem i rather dont wear them during travelling.

thanks

Yes and in the lower areas you would not even like to use sneakers, but sandals or flipflops. Far too hot and humid there for any normal shoes except when one is in an AC-cooled zone...

I always use sneakers for longer walks - even in the lower areas, but use flip-flops for shorter walks.

I once HAD to abandon my trainers when I got to Ella (in February) so thereafter wore flip flops for the rest of my stay in SL - including a climb up Ella Rock and Little Adams Peak then cycling to and along the south coast. I figured that if the locals can do it so can I.

Are sneakers the same as what we call trainers in England?

I am going to Sri Lanka in February and doing a 9 night tour with Kuoni, visiting Kandalama, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Tissamaharama (Yala). I thought we would need sturdy walking shoes at least. From previous posts on this thread it would appear my North Face walking sandals will surfice. What do you think?

Thank you.

No, even the treks higher up in the mountains like Eliya do not really need walking shoes. Insofar paths are a bit slippery due to humidity they're hardly ever on a steep slope unlike the Alps. The only place in Lanka where I'd wear closed shoes (not even specificly walking shoes) is Adam's Peak because it can get freezing cold at that altitude, with nasty chilly winds - but e.g. in Eliya for me sandals & socks suffice.

All the best,
