Sri Lanka phone and Internet

Am bringing an unlocked iPhone and an iPad to Sri Lanka for my 2-week trip. Any advice on buying a local sim card, using wifi or 3G, etc? I just want to make local calls if necessary, and use the Internet for emails, use of google maps, news.

Hi Carol,

Dialog and Mobitel are good providers for SIM's, use that for calls. Wifi is by far fastest for the Web stuff and free at quite a percentage of the accomodations, but the providers can also give you a 3G dataplan.

All the best,

Hi Carol

We use Mobitel as we have found it gives better coverage in out of the way places than Dialog.

You can get either provider on arrival at the airport very easily. Just go to the far left after you come through the Customs exit where the banks will be in front of you. The guys there were helpful enough to put the cards into the ipad and iphone and check that all was working. Not that expensive.
