Sri Lanka Late April to Early May

We are looking to book some flights for a trip from Late April (24th/25th) until early May (7th), am I correct from my reasearch that we would be best to work counter clockwise from Colombo around the bottom, up the east coast and then to the central regions given the time period we are there?

Also, is the 25th New Year? Is there somewhere nearby when we land that would be a nice place to be for the celebration? I have heard Colombo and other main districts can be gohst towns?

Sinhala/Tamil New Year is 13 & 14 April. 25 April is Poya (full moon) Day, i.e. no alcohol being sold or served in shops/restaurants/bars.

Yes counterclockwise is fine. However do note that if you want more than 2 nights beachtime it's not cost-effective to keep the car due to his minimum daily mileage. Hence maybe plan such that beach (Passikudah or Trinco) is at the end, say bibi to driver there, and take a train back to Colombo at the end.

All the best,
