Bringin Rupees and Chocolate into Sri Lanka

Due to fly out on Thurs and trying to find out definitively the situation regarding money and chocolate.

I have seen that the limit for bringing in rupees is 5,000, but I have 30,000 Rupees at home that I plan to spend in Sri Lanka, that my brother gave me left over from his trip there a coupe of years ago. Would I be able to bring this in, if possible?

I am also bringing in about 20 bars of packaged Cadburys chocolate for family (don't ask!), about 3kg in total weight. Will there be any problems with this and would placing them in the hold luggage be best?

Thanks.

only 3 kg chocolate, my family need more and its no problem. Usually tourist not open their luggage.

Maybe you can share the 30.000 RS with friends than is legal.

Good to know about the chocolate. So putting it in checked luggage is fine?

Can't share money as I'm travelling alone.

The legal limit is LKR 5,000, but the chance you will get checked (as a westerner) is close to zero.

Be careful with the chocolate. It will melt in the heat.

Thanks for that. This may sound stupid, but how should I carry the money? On my person, or hand/checked luggage?

Thanks

My 5kg packet all together into a box into suitcase. Sometimes comes cold to Hikkaduwa, but beware in the car not into sun or close to engine or exhaust pipe.

Take the money with your papers or so. Not in the lugguage.

Hi there...

Choccies in your checked luggage, even better if you have a hard shell case as it does shield against warmth.., done this many times with no problems..

Cash, as with any other valuables, keep with you in hand lugguge, or on person, as Hans said highly unlikely you will be stopped..

Hi,

With due respect to all the above posters, just to let you know that my sister brought down 40KG chocolates to be distributed among the families from Canada when she traveled down to Sri Lanka last august and she had no problems in bringing this in. As Hans has mentioned, you being a westerner will not be checked mostly.

I know that Dave has brought in so much every time when he traveled to Sri Lanka and had no issues at all, right Dave?

Rgds,

Treshi.
