I have recently returned from a two week trip to Sri Lanka. Took in Kandy, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Galle, Minneriya National Park, Trincomalee and Nilaveli. Everything was super well organised by our tour operator there, Paragon Holidays. They know the country really well, and how to get things organised (as well as speaking more than three European languages between them). We had a driver that we liked so much he ate with us and even came on a snorkelling trip with us! We paid for all entry tickets to Sigirya, the park etc in advance through them, which is well worth doing to keep costs down once you are there. There is so much to see it's difficult to fit it all in, but enjoy what you can and don't try and do too much. Highlights - some tree houses in the middle of the jungle in Sigirya, seeing elephants and the beach at Nilaveli. In spite of what the Rough Guide says, I really enjoyed the local food; don't let it put you off!! Haggle your heart out to get those prices down in shops and check exchange rates before you leave. If the exchange places at Arrivals in Negombo airport are offering more or less what you have seen (give or take a couple of rupees) exchange some money there - it was the best exchange rate we got all holiday.
