10 days itinerary

I'm going to Sri Lanka with my wife. We'll travel at low budget. We land on 16th Dec at 8:30 and we need to be in Mirissa on 26th Dec, where we stay until 3rd Jan.

We have some idea of itinerary:

1. bus from airport to Kandy and stay 3 nights (to see Spice Garden, Kandian Dance, Kandy Temple, Kandy City, Botanical Garden, Elephant Orphanage, Lake)

2. go to cultural triangle. We don't know where to have a base (maybe Dambulla?) to see as much as possible in maybe 3 days. Bus transport?

3. go to Hill Country (maybe from Peradeniya with train to Ella) for 3 night

4. bus to Mirissa (if there is any)

5. from Mirissa to Colombo airport. We would like to be there at 13:00. How?

Does anyone have some advice to change something in this itinerary?

Do we need to reserve guesthouse, hostels, train and bus tickets,... in advance?

What kind of weather can we expect?

It's peak season, so it's recommended to book accommodation at least a few days ahead.

Airport-Cultural Triangle-Kandy seems more logical. You can take the train from Matara to Colombo and change to bus or taxi to the airport.

There are buses from Bandarawela to Matara. They pass through Ella.

Thank you, Hans. You are right. Airport-Cultural Triangle-Kandy seems more logical. But if we go first to Kandy, we can buy train tickets for further (Kandy to Ella) travel when we finish with triangle. And that one from Matara to Colombo. What do you think? It's a peak season...

If we go first to Dambulla I don't know where to buy tickets...

Is it ok to stay in Dambula for 3 days: one day for Sigriya+Dambulla, one day for Polonnaruwa and one day for Anuradhapura?

Tickets can't be booked in advance fro Matara-Colombo trains - except Rajadhani luxury coach which can be booked online.

Most people visit either Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura.

So 2 days in Dambulla should be enough: one day for Sigriya+Dambulla, one day for Polonnaruwa isn't it?

Then no need to go to Anuradhapura and we got 1 extra day. Where to spend it? Hill country, Adams Peak or rather maybe in Yale Park or somewhere else?

Should we expect rain as we go around 19th december in Dambulla and Hill Country?

We would like to see some nice tea plantations. Is it Ella ok for that or is it better Nuwara Eliya?
