Spending 2 weeks in Sri Lanka....what should we do?!

I'm going to Sri Lanka with my partner in Jan/Feb. We want relaxation/beaches, local culture and cuisine but not really sure where to start. Our budget is healthy . Any advice re route, hotels etc would be much appreciated.

Hi there,

First one week roundtrip by car with driver/guide covering at least Cultural Triangle for local Culture, Kandy for more culture and scenic, hills (Ohiya-Haputale-Ella as base) for tea and waterfalls and maybe 1 night for a safari. Afterwards beach stay: Tangalle, Mirissa, Unuwatuna, Hikkaduwa or Bentota/Beruwala all qualify as resort towns with plenty of things to do and places to eat.

All the best,

Hi,

Two weeks is enough time for you to cover most of the country without much trouble. Some of the places you must visit are the Galle fort, Yala National Park, Kandy, Hill Country and Sigiriya. The beaches will depend a bit on your taste as there is a lot to choose out of Southern beaches like Bentota, Beruwala, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Tangalle and Eastern and Northern beaches.

Most of the people prefer having a driver (specially with a healthy budget - you don't want to take chances with public transport) but you can also incorporate the hill country train ride to some part of your travel as it sees fit.

Yala safari and Tissa will take 2 days, Dambulla/Sigiriya another 2 days, Kandy 2 days, Ella 2 days and you can spend the rest of the time on beaches or can extend your travel a little North from Dambulla to include 2 days in the cultural triangle as well. (2 days are a rough estimation since most can be covered in 1 day as well)

There are a lot of reviews by people who had done the 2 week tour of Sri Lanka in TA, so you can get plenty of advice and tips from them.

Have a safe and exciting journey.

Thanks.

Shane.

Eastern and Northern beaches are not recommended in January/February.

Thanks so much for messages before Christmas .

Christmas over, back to planning Sri Lanka!

Wonder if I could ask some more advise.

We are in Tangalle for 6 nights, leaving on 31st. We are planning the following but worried that it might be too much travelling. Is the best way by car or train

Ella for day and half.

Kandy for day and half

Dambulla for day and half.

Any advice very much appreciated. Is it best to book trains before we go.

Hi there,

Just doable by car. Not by public transport; train would solely work Ella-Kandy anyhow and the other routes by bus (slow and hardly luggage space). If you want a scenic train ride you could do Ella-Nanu Oya and have the car pick you up there; it's holiday season hence prebooking Exporail or Rajadhani Express might be worth it. However these are on the 2nd train of the day so you'd loose some valuable time.

All the best,

Hi Erik

Thanks for your message.Bit worried we're trying to do too much now!

In your opinion, is is worth seeing Sigiriya Rock which is why we have added Dambulla into our itinerary.

Hi Sarah,

It's amongst our top-5 of the country. Upto you whether it's also yours ;-) A Youtube look at the video for 'Save a prayer' by Duran Duran might help, it contains shots of the Rock and some other nice Lankan stuff.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
