Negombo to Uwatuna travel

Greetings,

We're trying to find the best way to get from Negombo to Uwatuna on a Saturday. It looks like the train timetables have them leaving Colombo for Galle at either 630 or 1415; if there is a bus that doesn't take much longer than the train leaving somewhere in between, that would be great, especially if it left from Negombo. Any ideas?

Hi there,

1] There are also trains leaving Fort at 08:35 and 10:30. These don't start at Maradana so you might have some more trouble getting a seat.

2] Buses Colombo-Matara (AC Express) leave around every 15-20 minutes from Colombo so they are an alternative yes. However quite limited luggage space, for the AC ones often you must buy an extra seat for the backpack.

8:35 train is Kandy to Matara train. 10:30 is Vavuniya to Matara train. Both pass Maradana.

Yes you're right. Neither is mentioned on Seat61, will correct it with Mark if there is more to fix. Interestingly enough SRL site (GIC) fails to mention the 8:35 one as it treats it as two separate trains, Kandy-Colombo and Colombo-Matara. It does mention then 10:30 one.

But for neither of the trains the general advice that Maradana is a much better boarding place than Fort holds, as they'd be packed there already. However I'd still say 'better' instead of 'much better', as many people will leave in Fort and then the people standing inside have a good chance for a seat - more so than those embarking in Fort.

Tnx,

Both 8:35 and 10:30 trains are mentioned on GIC website.

www.gic.gov.lk/gic/index.php…

Seat61 only mentions a selection of trains in Sri Lanka.

Okay, meant to say:

'The 08:35 train does not show up on GIC site when you search for trains between Maradana and Galle/Matara'. Of course it will show when you search for trains between Maradana and Fort but that's not what OP or any other non-initiated traveller would do.

Yes Seat61 does not claim to be complete but it claims to be accurate for what it covers - and for these two trains it isn't as they are shown not attending Maradana at all (and starting in Fort). Will be corrected as I promised above, but not worth a mail exchange with Man-in-Seat-61 aka Mark on its own.

On a related sidenote, I _did_ post at Exporail site about their lousy website still mentioning a 10-month outdated timetable and happen to be at WTC late next week, so if they don't respond to the site contact I am tempted to just walk in with the complaint ;-)

Tnx,

Thank you both very much. I guess we would be hiring a car from Negombo Saturday morning to get to either the train/bus station. Is traffic normally lighter on Sat. morning, or still unpredictable?

Also, I see the train from Colombo would take about 2 1/2 hours. Is it about the same for the bus?

And there are also plenty of trains from Negombo to Colombo Fort. Be at the station early as it might get packed shortly before departure, and finding a train originating in Negombo also is better for a seat than a train coming in from Chilaw.
