3 week tour of Sri Lanka July / August with children.

We have flights booked and want to spend at least 3 nights in each place rather than moving all the time. We hope to get a car and driver. At the moment we are thinking of starting on the beach near Colombo, moving to kandy , then Minneriya national park and surrounding area including sigiraya rock then Nillivelli or upivelli beach and Anuradhapura for 3 nights to see surrounding sights.

Colombo 1 night before flying home. Is this feasible? Are we missing anything out which is a 'must see'. Does anyone have recommendations on itineraries? Should we prebook a driver or get one as we need one from guest houses? Any recommendations for accommodation, we are on a basic budget.

Hi there,

Your plans don't match that well with basic budget, as car-driver costs USD 50-60/day. For _all_ days as they have a minimum daily mileage. On the other hand individual transfers between your places, generally 150 km, would be around USD 90-100 so it's complex maths what is better. I'd say car-driver all the way to Trinco (all the way driver needs prebooking, individual transfers doesn't) _but_ place A'Pura together with Minneriya and use train for the day-before-last; direct connection (with quick transfer) Trinco to Colombo. This way you avoid the daily minimum mileage during the beach time. As for the program: if you do a daytrip to the Tea Country from Kandy indeed it covers the main sights.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
