Hi All !
We arrived in the morning, on a Sunday, and flew back to South Korea on the Monday.we visited in Sri Lanka one week.
Day 1. Took about 60 minutes to collect luggage and get to the Lobby, where our driver was waiting with a name board. All smiles !
we went, to Polonnaruwa, had some latish lunch, and visited Polonnaruwa. It was very nice, to see all (maybe not all), the different structures and temples. Most impressive were the (a) Tivanka Image House paintings (b) Gal Vihara and (c) quadrangle. Was late by the time we got to our accommodations near Sigiriya. Thankful for the Air Conditioning.
Day 2. Early start and managed to get right up to the summit. :-)
To anyone reading this; Do Not Miss Sigiriya ! Amazing place with the nice frescoes, gardens and landscaping, moats and much more ! Also, the legend of Sigiriya was very interesting.Had lunch near Sigiriya in a small but packed restaurant. On to Dambulla, visited the Cave Temples with all those paintings and Buddhist statues. Quite different from Sigiriya.Tired but continued on to Kandy for the night.
Day 3. Had enough time to do the main sites in Kandy. Liked the Temple of the Tooth (nice architecture), the King's residence, Natha Devala, Lake Round drive, View point overlooking the Lake, Royal Botanical gardens (beautiful and relaxing), and evening the Dance program ( the dancers are very flexible bodied and athletic). Night in Kandy again.
Day 4. Leisurely drive on the windy roads to Ramboda. went right down to the bottom of the Waterfall, wonderful feeling ! Visited Labookelle Tea factory and bought some Ceylon Tea for the folks back home. Drove to Nuwara Eliya, and did manage to visit the market building. Onto the railway station, and; so beautiful scenery passing by on the train to Ella !
picked up by the driver at Ella station, went to Mountain Heavens for the night.
Day 5. Super view from Hotel at breakfast, then drove down to Rawana Waterfall, right by the roadside ! Continued to Tissa, but did not stop as we wanted at least a look-in at Kataragama.Didn't really have much time there, as we had to come back to Tissa and get ourselves a Jeep for Yala ! Yala was really nice (It is when you see animals in their natural habitat), and we saw lots of different animals and plenty of birds. The best was the lone Leopard that we saw, almost closing time ! Just 10 minutes watching this magnificent animal and we had to rush back to the gates.
Day 6. Late morning start out and visit Tangalle, Mirissa and WeligamaContinued to Unawatuna, night at the one of the Beach hotel . Friendly, but service is not well trained.
Day 7. Visited the Galle Fort (nice to walk about not only the Ramparts but also on the narrow streets), Hikkaduwa, a Turtle conservation place (noticed there are several along the way), Hikkaduwa beach is most beautiful beach I saw. Bentota, then along the coastal road to Colombo. Evening when we got to Colombo, but the roads were quite busy and crowded, just stepped into the Galle Face Hotel for a look, continued to our accommodations at Villa Palma (ok for just one night).
Day 8. After breakfast straight to the Airport.
1. The beautiful and mostly genuine smiles of the Sri Lanka people.
2, The amazing places that we visited. Sigiriya, Kandy, Polonnaruwa, Yala,Hikkaduwa beach.
3. The Food; Rice and Curry, the exotic and tasty Fruits.
4. The change in Vegetation and even the climate from place to place in such a small Island.
5 The way we were treated by our driver, at the various accommodations and the general public.
1. To our Driver, Ruwan, who was top class from first to last, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and a very safe driver.
We booked our accommodations in consultations with our driver and all those had a bed for him.
We chose our driver selecting from a few from this forum and a few from our friends recommendations and finally we are very happy that we chose Ruwan.
We spoke with a number of people (Sri Lanka people), in various places and were quite impressed by their knowledge and grasp of the world around them.
Thank You All !
