Advise on best resort/village area to visit

We are planning our honeymoon for mid April 2015 and are looking at the east/south coast of Sri Lanka for a nice relaxed beach town type place. Kalutara? Galle? Thoughts? Were hoping not to have to travel too far from the airport, max 3 hours.

As its our honeymoon we are looking for a nice mid priced hotel/resort with the mod cons, but could be flexible on the price if the location is good. But at the same time don't want anything too flashy/club med-ish.

Ideally we would like to be able to walk from our hotel into a township to eat at local restaurants and visit markets etc..

We will be travelling with our 18 month old daughter so would like to keep things easy and relaxed.

To give you an idea, we have previously been to Hoi An and Goa and really enjoyed the vibe of both places. Is there somewhere along the same lines in Sri Lanka?

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hotels in Kalutara are quite far from town, and hardly any restaurants. There is no beach at Galle. Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna may be options.

Suggest staying inside the Galle Fort - lots of restaurants, galleries, museum, shops to explore. Take a tuk tuk (Rs.500 for locals!) down to Unawatuna - maybe Wijaya Beach or Amanda Resort for the day.

Galle Town, just outside the Fort has a market place, which maybe of interest to you.
