Sri Lanka in June - Recommendation please

Hi, my husband and I are in the final stages of planning our first trip to Sri Lanka arriving on the 4th June.

We have a doable but full schedule, route Colombo - Kandy - Ella - Yala - Hikkaduwa over 12 days.

The intention was to have a couple of days at Hikkaduwa for a beach 'chill out' at the end of the tour. However, given it's June would our time be better spent elsewhere?

Hello!

Id be quite interested to hear the beach recommendation too as Im going in May and was planning on doing the pretty much the same itinary as yourself but I have been advised that the East Coast would be better for beach time at that time of year.

Im not sure how bad the weather is likley to be along the south/west at that time of year. Website say May is the start of the monsoon but how bad actually is it?!

You may experience 3 types of days:

- Fully clouded with the odd shower, light or heavy

- 3-4 hours sunshine after 8 am and clouds building up in the afternoon with hefty thundershowers late afternoon, evening and night

- sun-clouds-rain-sun again and so on with the sunny spells lasting at least an hour and minimum 4 hours per day.

Thank you for the response Hans.

So with that said, would you recommend we go for it, use the days to take in the Cultural Triangle or find an alternative location for relaxation?

In June the beaches on the east coast (Passikudah and Trincomalee/Nilaveli) are the best.

Well, we have decided to alter our itinerary to fit in the Cultural Triangle with a stay at The Lake in Polonnuruwa. The beaches will just have to wait for another year ;)

Not sure where it will slot in yet but we will get there in the end. We are booking through Red Dot who have been very good up to now.

Haha it is a small world!! Hope u have a great trip!

I'm starting to think I should change my plans now too.

Hans what beach would you recommend out of those on the east coast?

We wanted our trip as the first half in the national parks for trekking and wildlife, then the second on a beach. We fly to Columbo and were gonna head to yala or udawalawa....if we then want to go to nilaweli, how easy will it be to get there? Are there other national parks that are nearer the north and East that would be more suitable?

Passekudah or Trinco beaches are best for swim, and relatively close to P'ruwa area. Wilpattu is as good and varied a park as Yala.

All the best,

You can't trek in the national parks. It's by jeep only.
