Just a few quick questions and feedback on a rough itinerary we are putting together. We have a friends wedding in Galle in July and are combining it with a little (12 days) travel around Sri Lanka. At this stage we touch down at Colombo at 10:20(am) on Friday 11th July, our return flight is Tuesday 22nd July at 16:45(pm). The Wedding is on Saturday 19th July so we need to be in Galle on this date.
At this stage we are thinking about running with the following:
Friday 11th – Arrive Colombo; Colombo to Dambulla (Cave Temple afternoon); Stay Dambulla
Saturday 12th – Stay Dambulla; day trip to: Polonnarwa (morning) / Minneriya Safari (afternoon)
Sunday 13th – Stay Dambulla; day trip to: Sigirya (am) / Ritigala (afternoon)
Monday 14th –Dambulla to Kandy (morning); Explore Kandy (afternoon); Stay Kandy
Tuesday 15th – Kandy to Ella (Train); Stay Ella
Wednesday 16th – Ella
Thursday 17th – Ella to Tangalle (Bus); Stay Tangalla
Friday 18th – Tangalle
Saturday 19th – Tangalle to Galle (Bus in morning) for Wedding; Stay Galle
Sunday 20th – Galle
Monday 21st – Galle to Colombo/Negomba; Stay Colombo/Negomba
Tuesday 22nd – Explore Colombo (morning)/Flight (afternoon 16:45pm).
Is that itinerary all viable? We are trying to limit ourselves on moving around too much hence basing ourselves in Dambulla for 3 nights and taking day trips to the sites. Is Dambulla the best site for this or should we instead consider Habarana?
Similarly are we allocating enough time to Kandy with 1 day?
Going on a Safari is also another priority of this trip and based on the July month and suggestions I’ve read that Yala isn’t all that great/overcrowded these days we have opted with Minneriya, is this our best option or should we reconsider?
Similarly for our last night is it worth travelling back to Colombo (or onto Negomba) on the Monday and staying the night and letting us check out some of the capital, again I’ve heard mixed reviews whether Colombo warrants a visit. The other option would be to just stay in Galle an extra night and relax.
Finally we are trying to limit costs for most of the travel and happy to deal with Public Transport (Bus/Train) for most of our transport. The one exception would be on the day we arrive, in which case we don’t want to stuff around too much timewise with getting to Dambulla. I’ve read cabs can be taken from the airport to Dambulla for $75 (call it our splurge), however is it possible to hire a private driver for this one way trip instead, meeting us at the airport and taking us to Dambulla and would this save on cost?
Thankyou in Advance for any help :)
