Itinerary check

Hi all,

Would appreciate our advice on the itinerary below in terms of:

-Timings (too much/too little)

-Rough budget (for food, drinks and excursions)

-Weather in August

-Recommendations of hotels and/or things to do! (We are mid twenties couple, enjoy seeing the real culture of a place, budget c.$70 per night).

-best place to see elephants on this trip!

-any 'must see places' we are missing.

Thanks so much.

Colombo - 1 night

Kandy - 2 nights

Nuwara eliya - 1 night

Ella - 2 nights

Kandy - 1 night

Pollonuwurwa - 2 nights

Vakarie - 3 nights

Uppuveli - 3 nights

Negumbo 1 night

Hi there,

Presume you mean Wakarai? Quite an underdeveloped beach but has potential yes, more chance of finding something a bit to the south in Passekudah/Kalkudah.

Well the sequence is unlogical. Colombo-Ella-Eliya-Kandy-Passi/Wakarai-Trinco (Uppuveli) - Pollonaruwa - Negombo makes more sense in terms of shortest distances and travel time. Elephants: the Gathering in the Habarana parks near P'ruwa.

Hard to give a budget if you're not telling whether you plan to do this by car-driver or by public transport...

All the best,

Thank you for your help!!

We intended to do as much via train as possible, and a car thereafter.

We were told wakarie was very unspoilt and remote. However we are also after some evening bars or restaurants so that's why we've split the beach time between trinco and wakarie. What do you think?

Hi again,

Nilaveli has some bars and restaurants (but below 5), Wakarai and Passikudah don't. Well the itin given in #1 is quite good for offering as much train as possible:

Colombo-Ella-Eliya-Kandy and Trinco (Uppuveli) - Pollonaruwa - Negombo can all be done by train (well from Trinco go to Gal Oya and take cab from there to P'ruwa as the connection is bad). Only for Kandy-first coastal town and from there to Trinco you'd need cab.

Hi Erik

Thanks again for your response.

We are now thinking that we may go to Arugum bay and trinco/uppevelli, rather than stopping in between. The former for a bit of Backpacker scene and the later for snorkelling and sunbathing. That way we can go direct from Ella to Arugum bay and then up the east coast.

Would be very grateful of your advice, particularly considering it'll be August when we visit so conscious of the weather.

Thanks

Cara

Hi again Cara,

Yes sounds doable. Train Colombo-Kandy-Eliya-Ella, bus or cab to Arugam, bus or cab along the east coast to Trinco, and from there train to (near) Pollonaruwa and further train to Colombo. Should be gorgeous weather esp. along the coast!

Thanks so much.

Is this too much travelling for 2 weeks? How much is the likely taxi on those can journeys?

Very grateful for your help!

7. Re: Itinerary check

Hi again,

That's quite subjective. You could at least remove Nuwara Eliya as base to stay as Ella is so closeby, and then visit it as a halfdaytrip by bus from Ella. One time less to unpack and pack. Ella to Arugam by cab would be around Rs 10,000 and Arugam to Trinco around Rs 18,000...

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
