7 day honeymoon

Hi,

We're heading to Sri Lanka for a week of our honeymoon before flying onto the Maldives in late September. As the Maldives will be a relaxing beach break we'd like to see a bit of Sri Lanka without feeling like we're rushing about too much! We'll be in Sri Lanka the last week of September and the 3 main things we're interested in are the whale watching trips around Mirissa, visiting a tea plantation and one of the national parks. As we've spent a bit more on the Maldives accommodation we're planning on splashing out a bit less on the Sri Lanka trip - does anyone have any advice around itinerary, modes of transport etc?

Thanks very much :)

Hi Annie,

Sorry to disturb your dream, but Mirissa has NO whales this season. Nov to Apr-May roughly. Slight chances in September for them in Trinco but season there generally is July-Aug, so I would not bother.

Best way to spend your time then is two bases. One being Kandy, also suitable to see a tea plantation. And 2nd Giritale-Habarana-Dambulla-Sigiriya, to see e.g. a Habarana national park (season for the 'elephant gathering') and lots of culture there. At many different budget levels.

All the best,

Hi Annie ,

You don't get to see the whales in Mirrissa in September therefor skip it from your iterenary.

If it is week holiday you can plan this way to see what you interest.

1st Night Colombo.

2nd night Kandy ( Elephant orphanage , Temple of the tooth ,Botanical Garden etc. )

3rd night Nuwaraeliya ( Little England town , Tea Plantation , Water falls and hills )

4th Night Yala ( National park game safari )

Last 2 nights Beach front Unawatuna or Mirrissa or Bentota )

Hope this will help you.

Yala is closed in September and Negombo is far better value for money than Colombo if you need to rest a night before starting the tour.

Below is an itinerary I can think of for honeymooners keeping some free time as well -

Day 1- Arrival, overnight in Negombo

Day 2- Kandy (Pinnawala on the way), attractions in Kandy, overnight in Kandy

Day 3 - Day trip to Dambulla/Sigiriya, overnight in Kandy

Day 4 - Nuwara Eliya, visit attractions, overnight in Nuwara Eliya

Day 5 - Horton Plains (since Yala will be closed in Sep), head to Mirissa

Day 6 - Whale watchinng, etc. overnight in Mirissa or closeby

Day 7 - back to airport, visit Colombo on the way if you need shopping

Since it's bit of traveling and you will be on honeymoon I would suggest a private car and driver. Usual cost is about 60$ per day. feel free to PM me if any recommendations are needed.

cheers

Well better wake up, Tharindu! This was for September, hence as written above NO whales in Mirissa! And yes Horton is also a national park but would not see it as alternative for Yala, Udu Walawe would qualify more...

Tnx,

Where do the whales go in September? :) There will be whales in Mirissa throughout the year but higher chance of seeing them during the season. Udawalawe is just a lot of elephants so I don't see much more animals there. If they are to skip Mirissa then no point of going all the way down to Udawalawe anyway. Yes, Horton plains is more famous for scenery than the animals.

Hi Again ,

Yes Yala is closed in September and instead of Yala you can go to Udawala National park. Negombo is good option for day one but why I prefer Colombo is if you spend last two nights beach front it's not bad idea to have one night in Colombo.
