Travel advice

Hi guys,

We will travel to Sri Lanka begin august for 16 days.. we prefer to travel with public transport. This is our suggested itinerary. Do you have suggestions for places to stay in the hill country and the best places to stay in the golden triangle area? We would like to visit the Minneriya National Park and want to end our journey in the Trincomalee area for some beach time.

Negombo 04-aug - Hill Country 05-aug - Hill Country 06-aug Kandy 07-aug Kandy 08-aug

Dambulla 09-aug Sigiraya 10-aug Habarane 11-aug Anuradhapura 12-aug Anuradhapura 13-aug

Trincomalee 14- 18 aug Colombo 19-aug

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Geert

It will depend on your preference. For hill country you can consider Nuwara Eliya, Ohiya, Haputale or Ella. You can do the triangle from staying at Sigiriya, Dambulla, Habarana.

Hi,

I wouldn't miss Nuware Eliya in the hill country. It has a lovely park called Victoria park. Ella has some wonderful waterfalls. Do Adams peak if you like a nice walk. Top tip would be to get the train up to Kandy. It's beautiful and cheap!

Don't miss sygiria near dambulla. It was my favourite part of sri Lanka. The markets in dambulla are great!

Sounds like a great trip.

Don't be afraid to get the buses. They're chaotic and it can be hard to find the right one. But they're ridiculously cheap and I met some really interesting people on them. Making mistakes can also add great stories to your trip.

PS you'll need to bear in mind that the roads and rail are pretty bad and it can take a really long time to get around. For example the train from nuware eliya to Kandy is 3 hours and the quickest way to get there. You may need to trim some stops off your trip. Getting to trinco from the dambulla area will be a long trip. Getting from trinco to Colombo is an overnight bus.

Just a thought.

Adam's Peak is offseason in August, hence not recommended. Eliya to Kandy is 3 hours by bus and 4 hours (from Nanu Oya) to Kandy. Indeed quite a packed plan, and Dambulla-A'Pura-Trinco is not the most logical sequence...

All the best,

Thnx for your advice. Erik is polonnaruwa perhaps a better option instead of a'pura? Or would you recommend an other sequence? i think we will pick one place in the Hill country besides kandy, nuware sounds good.

Yes it would ease the travel. For A'Pura it's best to plan Dambulla-Trinco-A'Pura-airport. AP is more alive with devotion but artistically P'ruwa is a bit nicer, your choice.

All the best,
