Where to Stay in Sri Lanka?

My family (two adults and two children 9 and 10) are staying in Sri Lanka from the 30th March to 13th April this year. We are staying in Negambo for the first three nights in the villa Araliya and then propose to go further south. We cannot make up our minds where to go , The choices are Galle, Hikkaduwa or bentota. We have a budget of no more than about $180 per night for a family room. We are looking for a hotal/villa in a town where there is a beautiful large beach and lots of good restaurants which is safe to walk around but not too tacky. Also would appreciate some advice on best way to get to and from say galle from Negombo and rough estimate of price for us all to travel. Many thanks all.

Hi Paul,

Forget about Galle town. None of the acco there has a beach closeby. However if you want to be near Galle, Unawatuna is a good alternative - only 10 mins away by road.

Bentota and U'tuna both fully meet your criteria, with many restaurants in walking distance and also not hindered by the traffic. The situations are as follows:

1) U'tuna: main road and railway is 1 km away, no big noise, restaurants on byroads

2) Bentota: main road and railway IS next to the hotels, some noise, but hotels and restaurants situated on their own byroad (Bentota Strip) and hence safe walking.

3) Hikkaduwa: main road and railway IS next to the hotels, some noise, hotels and restaurants on this same main road so crossing towards a nice shop/place might take quite some caution...

So in terms of walking safety, Hikkaduwa raises some doubts. In terms of safety against criminals all places are same - pretty good if you don't do things you also would not do back in UK, like dark back alleys...

For a family with luggage, two ways of making this journey:

a) Car with driver. Would take at most (to U'tuna) 5 hours and cost at least Rs 10,000.

b) Train, with transfer in Colombo Fort station. Would take around 6-7 hours including the transfer to Galle, again Bentota and Hikkaduwa 1-2 hours less. (Last part from station to hotel anyhow by taxi). Cost altogether maybe Rs 700-800.

Note als that esp. the train Negombo-Colombo might not be very suitable for smaller kids, with all doors permanently open - but yours might just be big enough to take care with this.

Have fun,

Hi,

In Hikkaduwa i could suggest you The Coral Garden hotel. It has all the features what you have specified in your post. If you could discuss with the hotel they will pick you from Araliya. You need further details please let me know.
