Tipping Drivers and others

Hi - I hope someone can assist me - I am hiring a driver who will be prepaid but I would like to give him/her a tip at the end of the journey. Would US dollar ot Rupee be the preferred currency ?

Hi,

IMO tips have to earned, not expected.

LKR 300-500/day is a reasonable tip. LKR is the currency in Sri Lanka, so that will be preferred, but USD/GBP/EUR or any western currency (in notes) will be gladly accepted.

In Sri Lanka it's a mix of round 3-pin and square 3-pin. Most hotels will have adaptors for their guests in the reception. Adaptors can also be bought quite cheaply.

It is never a must to give tips anywhere in the world.

Would people in Sri Lanka be happy to take UK pound coins as tips?

They certainly won't say no, but then, they have to ask tourists to change the coins for, say, a £10 note when they have enough, as they cannot change coins to their own currency which is ultimately what they will need to do.

I have always tipped Red Dot drivers - they have been excellent and it is well deserved. As Hans said, Rs. 300 to 500 per day (that's £2 - £3.)

My problem is that you cannot take Rupees into the country and if I change money in the airport I am likely to be given large denomination notes.
