Hi there,

Base yourself in Kandy for the 2 nights. From there it really depends what you want to see. Most likely Pinawela elephant orphanage, do that on your way to/from the airport. Other popular options, each for a full day, are

a) Sigiriya rock fortress and Dambulla golden temple. Leave Kandy early in order to climb the rock before the midday heat starts!

b) Tea plantations, waterfalls and vistas of the hill country; e.g. upto Ramboda Falls (2 x 1.5 hours) or Eliya (2 x 2.5 hours).

All the best,

Well 3D/ 2N you can do Kandy based ancient city tour as above mentioned. meantime you can be based around Bentota, Galle or Mirissa and do south coast - wild life and gem city tour.

Day 1 - Colombo city tour, Visit to Galle (UNESCO world heritage site - fortress bursting with life), purchase some excellent quality hand made lace, slit fishermen seeing or fishing on top of a slit (only in sri lanka) overnight by off the beaten track beaches in the southern coast (madiha, mirissa or galle)

Day 2 - leave for tissa in the morning. temple pilgrimage in tissa and kataragama. yala wild life safari or

do whale watching in the morning and leave for udawalawa. Enroute hot water well experience. elephant experience in the park with most number of recorded elephants in sri lanka. baby elephant experience from the orphanage at Udawalawa. Overnight Ratnapura or Udawalawa

Day 3 - Sri lankan exquisite gem experience. visiting gem mines and gem museums. departure

my mentioned itinerary is much off the beaten track and includes some wonderful places which will always keep on your mind. cultural triangle and hill country are busy destinations still i would say they are very much wonderful.

cheers!!!!!

thanks erikdr and heruk for the replies!

i will read about the places you have mentioned and perhaps shoot another question or two about them later on.

@heruk, i just googled about the fishermen and it's incredible! will definitely add that to our itinerary.

Stilt fishermen and gem museums are tourist rip-offs.

And also Heruk's tour would bring you 7 hours of being on the road each of the 3 days. Totally crazy, and more meant to bring money in the pockets of the operator than to help the tourists. Stick to Kandy if you want any rest out of the tour, and there are real hidden gems (not some of the trashy tourist traps mentioned in #2) there too if you want them...

Hi,

Just leave the air port jump in to a Kandy Bus, the hill city (4-5 hours). Kandy city is the center of the country,on the way you will see a lot,so from there plan what you want to see and do. ask any regular person. don't waste your money on tour guides and hotels on your short trip, just enjoy. Have fun.

Hi there

Day 1- Colombo or airport to Sigiriya/ en-route Pinnawela elephant orphange /overnight stay at Habarana

Day 2 - Visit rock temple Dambulla & Drive to Kandy

Day 3 - Back to airport en-route Tea factory on kandy-Colombo road

But could do more depending on the time you wish to start on day 1 & end on day 3.

Good luck & have a great holiday..

Cheers/Ondrae

@atta1...

thank you for your reply.

i have received some offers for tour guides... so, there really is no need?

is it okay to just use the public transport? which is?

do "regular srilankans" easy to talk to?

hopefully, we get to see a lot in those days.

thanks
