Save but expensive choice. If you want the real deal, opt for that famous restaurant on the beach further south in Colombo (reservations required). Everyone knows - although i have forgotten the name.

Got it: Beach Wadiya. They have a website nowadays!

Well, if by real deal, you mean sri lankan chilli crabs, then Wadiya is alright. The restaurant decor has seen much better days though.

Ministry of Crab is still the best option if you want large crabs with good service and surroundings. It's relatively expensive and you can order other dishes - smaller crabs or fish - but then it beats the point.

If you want Sri Lankan style chilli crab, the best option is curry leaves at Hilton. It has a fresh seafood buffet so you can eat made-to-order crabs to your heart's content.

If you're a frequent visitor to Longbeach Singpoare, then you will not be so impressed with the Ministry of Crab. Otherwise, it is still a recommended dinning experience.

There is another less explored alternative but on the super-spicy side: Yaal

There is Yaal and few other restaurants that serve spicy "Jaffna" crabs.

But I'm afraid none of them are an alternative to the Ministry of Crab.

The MOC is also the wrong place to go to if you eat small spicy crabs, sitting on plastic chairs with a loud atmosphere around you.

If you go to Yaal, do the dinner with crusty bread, coconut salad, crab curry and wash it down with sweet ginger plain tea!

Another crab option: www.yamu.lk/place/the-crab-company.html

Yep. There are a couple of reputed caterers who deliver "Large Crab" dishes to your door. They match the MOC menu too. But they have a minimum quantity and need to be pre-ordered a day before.

Not at all practical or suitable for a tourist or visitor.
