Help with 3rd destination!

My wife and I are in the early stages of planning a trip to Turkey. We plan on flying into Istanbul, and immediately flying on to Cappadocia. We'll do 3 nights in Cappadocia, 3 nights somewhere else, and 3 nights in Istanbul. Now we just have to figure out the "somewhere else!"

What we're looking for out of the "somewhere else":

1. Easy to get to from Cappadocia (meaning, flights available)

2. Not too touristy... we'd like an authentic cultural experience, but would also like it to be touristy enough that we can find a nice hotel.

3. We like driving, so having some nice sightseeing within driving distance, that would be a plus.

4. Easy to get to Istanbul

What would you recommend? Thanks!!

From Capadocia why not fly back over to Izmir and use your time driving around the north of the area ina slow return to Istanbul? You can take in Bergama, the beautiful northern Aegean coast area around Ayvalık,perhaps go over on the ferry to Midilli Island(a Greek island) or take a look at Bursa or Iznik. In that area there are lots of possibilities and all easy enough to find but away from the usual tourist haunts too.

We'll definitely take that into consideration... thank you!

If we did Fethiye, would be easily be able to get in between Istanbul and Capadocia from there?

Unfortunately there are no direct flights from Capadocia region to Dalaman(the airport for Fethiye),they all go via Istanbul!Long journey and rather pricey too!

It is however possible to fly to ızmir and then either travel down to Fethiye either on the bus or by hire car collected from the airport. The travel time is around 5-6 hours by bus and 4-5 by car-depends how many photo stops I guess :)

If you hire from a national or international company(Hertz,Avis etc.) you should be able to return the car at Dalaman airport ready for a flight up to Istanbul, they are cheap and regular from there .

This widens your options...and now you're spoilt for choice!

BTW...don't even think about coming back to ask me the question that is hanging off your lips now!You know, the one thats starts"Oh my!Well,if you were us which............... LOL!

Hi zrooster99...

I hate to butt in here but dependinf on when you are planning to travel there are direct flights from Cappadocia to Antalya with Pegasos airlines until the end of October 2010.

why not consider flying to antalya and then spending some time along this side of the coast.

<<<<2. Not too touristy... we'd like an authentic cultural experience, but would also like it to be touristy enough that we can find a nice hotel.<<<<

why not consider staying in the village of Cirali..non-touristy & authentic ..

If flying into the airport at Antalya it sounds like Cirali would be the perfect place for you both to relax and inwind... Cirali is a small village located about 1 hours drive southwest from Antalya ( 1.5 hrs from the Antalya airport ) and boasts a beautiful secluded 4 km beach, the ruins of Olympos, the flames of the Chimeara, as well as a protected area by the WWF for the nesting of the Caretta sea turtles.

No mass tourism or 5 star hotels. Small shops, quiet bars, restaurants, and no discos. It is more of a place for nature lovers and chilling out.

activites to do....boat trips, snorkelling, diving, biking, seakayaking, trekking, climbing, day trips to nearby Kemer or Kumluca to visit local markets, etc..

It is a wonderful place for families and the mature traveller and is one of the last remaining villages on the med. coast that has not been taken over by mass tourism.

Cirali would be a good base as it's location is good for day trips to visit the many surrounding areas..Antalya 1 hr away and Kas about 2 hrs...plus with many worthwhile sights to visit in between..

for shopping etc...you can visit the nearby towns or city of antalya for the daily markets..if that interests you...

and then you can fly back to antalya with the many low cost domestic airlines..turkish airlines, pegasos, atlas jet, onur air etc..

Why do you have to make this so much harder on me!!! :) Now's you've got me looking at Cirali and Kas! :)

There were a could things about Fethiye that we are excited about potentially seeing... Karmylassos and Tlos. While I really like the idea of Cirali, those sites are quite far from it. From Kas they would be a bit more accessible than at Cirali, but Kas seems to be quite a ways from Antalya.... is that the case? Speaking along these lines, how trustworthy are the drive times on Google Maps?

Kaş is a good couple of hours drive after Cırali. If you like the idea of a small village like Cırali then rather than stay in Fethiye why not take a look at Farilya? This would put you roughly half way between Fethiye and Kaş.If it is ancient sites you are particularly interested in then this section of the coast is filled with them.

And just to queer the pitch even more not far away from Fethiye and on the way to Kaş is Patara. The wonderful deserted beach of the village is backed by some excellent ruins.

Can you extend your stay by a few days I wonder???

I've already extended our stay further than we're comfortable wtih! :)

I couldn't find anything on Farilya? Does it go by a different name?

That Patara beach looks wonderful! I am so amazed by the sheer number of beautiful beaches in Turkey... before researching this trip, that's not something I ever would have thought of! We'll be going in early to mid-October... I'm guessing the weather won't exactly be beach weather?

Ohhh I am so sorry.I typed Farilya but should be FARALYA.No wonder you didn't find anything.I am sorry!Try again with the right place name :)

In October the weather on the south coast is still very good for the most part. The evenings after dark may start to feel a little cool so a wrap or light jacket could be useful, but the days are still good for swimming and the sea still warm.

Yes you're correct Turkey does have some excellent beaches on all it's sea borders. Many have now been spoilt due to tourism and over commercialisation but there are still plenty of lovely unspoilt ones to be found.Good reason to maybe come back another time :)
