How easy is it to travel Turkey without a tour?

We are in our 50's and fit but people have said travelling in Turkey is too hard without a tour or a car and we don't really want to hire a car. My husband doesn't want to drive in Turkey!!

We want to do the trip from Istanbul via Gallipoli and around to Cappadocia using the bus system then fly back to Istanbul from Cappadocia. We plan to take about 8-10 days (about the last 2 wks of May 2014) for the trip and just book as we go.

Is this feasible or is there just too much to organise as you go?

Also any tips on things to do or not do, same with places and good accomm tips would be appreciated.

Turkey is an incredibly easy country to tour DIY.Intercity buses and domestic flights are very well organised, safe, clean and cheap.

The run from Gallipolli to Cappadocia is a long one so you could break this up a little by taking the bus down the coast to Izmir, visit Ephesus and then fly from Izmir to Kayseri for Cappadocia.

This would make best use of your time(which isn't a great deal for all you want to see)by not having too much ground travel and taking advantage of overnight buses on occasion.

Thanks for the reply. The flight you talk about was something I considered or flying to Cappadocia when we arrive in Istanbul and going back the other way. It is really not knowing how easily you can go between places as we are more used to the train travel in other parts of Europe.

Also, once arrived in a particular town, how easy to get to the the various sites? Do most places have buses to sights?

Someone also suggested we visit Kaz....can you advise on that stop at all?

At present Turkey is busily laying and upgrading many tracks for the high speed train to use.

At present the only cities that are connected by fast trains are Ankara, Eskisehir & Konya.

Soon Istanbul will also become a part of the high speed network.

The bus network of Turkey is high class and one of the best in the world. There are buses that go everywhere and very frequently as well.

Planes are another useful option to use when travelling within Turkey.

Please read some of the other members ''Trip report''. Just type in the search box and many will come up. also blog pages plus photos on Flickr are a wealth of information and a complete guide for places like Istanbul and Cappadocia.

For transport between Istanbul - Cappadocia and Izmir I always recommend flying..as the flights are quick and not much more in cost that a plane ticket...an overnight bus is around 10-12 hrs whereas a internal flight is around 1 hr

Not targeted at anyone but I think facebook has dumbed down some people as they rely on it as their sole source for information, news, events etc

Moya believe me Turkey is a wonderful country and you are going to be head over heels.
