Should we hire a car in Trabzon and finish at Sanlurfa?

We are looking to spending 2 -3 weeks touring eastern Turkey mid May , starting by flying into Trabzon from Istanbul and hiring a car to drive to Ayder and Altiparmak, as a base for the Kackar Mtns, then on to Ani,Lake Van, perhaps dropping the car off at Sanlurfa airport after visiting Mt Nemrut. Any suggestions? How rough are the roads( would a Ford Fiesta be OK?) and is this too much in distance? Suggestions on places we must see are very welcome!

you can hire car in Trabzon then visiting to attractions around Black Sea region. i recommend Uzungol and Sumela manastry and Karaca cave in Gumushane. then u can fly to sanliUrfa from trabzon via ankara or istanbul connected.

This would be ideal and if you can make it more 3 weeks rather than 2 then so much the better.

No,a Ford Fiesta will not be enough, you need something far more meatier than that or you'll need to get out and push it some of the hills haa haa!

Hire a diesel for a start, cheaper to buy per litre and better economy too.Something like a 1.4 or 1.6 diesel turbo will give you the power and torque you need yet still be relaitively economical to run.

Roads vary from excellent to ...not so bad to...goat tracks. In the Kaçkars you are likely to still come across road works going on to repair winter weather damage to some smaller roads so keep an eye out for this.

Whilst around the Kaçkars also head over in to Ardahan Province to Çıldır and Aktaş lakes both high mountain lakes so utterly serene and unspoilt. It would be easy to visit there on your way down to Anı and Kars.

I imagine you'll also visit Doğubeyazit for the palace there too won't you? Then also call in at nearby Diaydın to visit the thermal springs there.

Everyone goes to Van,Adilceviz and Ahlat yet Bitlis tends to get overlooked but this is a nice little town to look around.

You mention dropping off the car at Urfa but why not try to just creep on a bit to Gaziantep. The mosaic museum here is superb and flights from here back to Istanbul are generally cheaper than those from Urfa.In addition you are close to Birecik and Halfeti where you can take a boat trip along the Euphrates River,a lovely thing to do.

Hmmm,I've probably given you idea's enough to fill 4 weeks :) so you need to do some research and prioritise into lists of must do's,maybe's and if time to do's.But at least you can come back again.....

P.S. I'd love to come along as your windscreen cleaner, tyre pumper or luggage carrier, enjoy!

Thanks very much for your very detailed advice. This is extremely helpful as we'll now go ahead with plans and include the places you have mentioned, ending in gaziantep after 3 weeks. Much appreciated!
