Hidden treasures of Istanbul

Let's face it, Istanbul is a paradise for sight seeing. I am going there soon, and although I am going to seek out the main attractions, I also like strange, off-the-beaten-track things too.

Can anybody suggest some not so well known 'treasures' of Istanbul? glorious vistas, characterful neighbourhoods, intriguing buildings, interesting shops, 'shocks' of colour and so on. I am particularly fond of strange and bizarre photo opportunities.

Thank you very much

go out and explore the villages along the Bosphorus, out from Istanbul. you can take the regular ferry(not the cruise) and get off at any stop. there are many interesting things to see,Rumeli hisar in Bebek, the park in Emirgan and farther out. you could do the same on the asian shore,go to Anadolu hisar, explore the villages and see a totally different side of Istanbul. if you want peace and quiet, the Princes' islands would certainly appeal to you. you could also explore the areas of sultanahmet that don't have tourist attractions, down kucukayasofya caddesi. there are plenty of places to see where there are no tourists. you can do the same thing in Taksim and beyoglu, especially if you walk down Siraselviler caddesi. no tourist attractions, just interesting neighborhoods.go to Nisantasi or sisli, pretty streets and great views.

Hi GlobalGeezer,

Off the regular beaten track are neighborhoods like Fener/Balat (Golden Horn), Pierre Loti cafe (Eyub), Galata Tower area, Asmalimescit area, Cezayir street/Beyoglu, Cukurcuma/Cihangir, Nevizade street, almost all villages along Bosphorus with special emphasis on Ortakoy, Bebek, Emirgan, Kanlica, Anadolu Kavagi, Yoros castle, Uskudar and Kadikoy on the Asian side, Bagdad street on the Asian side(Kadikoy), Nisantasi, Kucukayasofya neighborhood next to Sultanahmet, Suleymaniye mosque neighborhood at Beyazit, Zeyrek neighborhood at Fatih, Pera/Sishane neighborhoods, the iPrinces islands (especially Buyukada). All these and many more have lots of characteristic buildings, characteristic restaurants, and very interesting views and photo opportunities.

good luck,
