Grand Prix 2011 - best area to stay??...

Hi all,

We are coming to the Grand Prix in May and as we are unsure of istanbul and the surrounding areas would appreciate some suggestions on which area to stay in?.

I understand we either stay near to the circuit, but far from the old city or vice versa...

Taking this into consideration I think we would prefer to stay nearer to the old city or areas we can sight-see and socialise and just travel to the circuit for the 3 days and then spend the rest of the 4 days sight-seeing.

I have considered the areas Beyoglu and Sultanahmet....but would appreciate any alternatives.

Many thanks in advance for your help and advice...I look forward to hearing your suggestions..

AR xx

When I read the title of your post the first thought in my mind was that you should stay wherever you can get a reservation. We are reading lots of reports from people who are having trouble finding rooms available in their favorite hotels in May.

The question between Beyoglu and Sultanahmet is a difficult issue. If you notice the frequently asked questions on the right hand side of the forum page you can click on this question and evaluate the responses. There is, of course, not one right answer. It pretty much depends upon what type of experience you want, what kind of a hotel you want and how much money you are willing to spend. This late it may also depend upon which hotels still have vacancies.

I prefer Sultanahmet to Beyoglu because we do not do lots of night time activities, and I like the old romance of Sultanahmet. Our favorite hotel in the old city is the Apricot.

I would also suggest that you look at hotels in the Sirkeci area. This neighborhood is adjacent to Sultanahmet and is convenient to the tram. We like the Sirkeci Konak here, and the Erboy is also popular with many visitors.

In the end, you really cannot make a bad decision. Beyoglu is easily reached fom Sultanahmet and vice versa. If you plan to party into the wee hours of the morning, however, you will have to take a taxi back to your hotel if you stay in Sultanahmet as public transportation stops. A taxi, however, is less than 20TL for up to four people and is fairly cheap.

Hi AR,

I agree with the recommendations of Busy-retired. I also would prefer to stay at the Old City and Sirkeci area, with its closeness to Sultanahmet attractions and to the port area and Spice Bazaar would be fine. You can always use one of the organized shuttles by travel agencies to get to the circuit grounds and back. Last year Backpackers travel organized such shuttle services, and this year they may do the same. Have a look: "tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293974-i368-k4035…" and "tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293974-i368-k3657…".

Thank you Mount Dora & Enigma for your advice!

We have managed to book into a hotel in Pendik for the duration of the Grand Prix and will then move nearer to the old city for the remainder of our holiday once the races are over...

I'l be sure to look into the old city for part 2 of our vacation!!

Cheers

AR
