Conflict with Syria

We have a cruise planned for July with stops in Istanbul and Ephesus. We are so excited about seeing Turkey, however with the latest issues with Syria we are a little apprehensive. Can anyone tell me if there have been any problems with cruise ships stopping in Turkey? Is everything safe over there for Americans? Thanks so much.

Hi SophieGurl,

The Syrian border is one thousand kilometer away from Istanbul so we don't feel much about it here. The Syrians are trying to cool things down as they're claiming this was by mistake. I don't think the Turkish government will retaliate this.

SophieGurl, This is not something that should bother you or anyone else. This is a political issue taking place thousands of miles away. Syria will most likely be punished politically and economically for what they have done but that would be it.

Turkey will not be allowed to embark on a dangerous adventure by Russia and China who have the veto power in the UN. Neither will the US or EE back Turkey's bid for middle eastern supremacy by letting Turkey occupy Northern Syria. Syria has enough in its hands trying to fight off insurgents supported by the almost all Western countries as well as most sunni islamist countries who wish to replace the current dictatorship with an Islamic Brotherhood dictatorship as is happening in Egypt. Therefore Syria cannot afford to do anything towards Turkey.

Hence, cruise ships will ply their regular routes without worrying their insurers and without needing to buy additional War Clauses.

You are as safe as you would have been without a Syrian crisis, just as the previous Egyptian, Libyan and Tunisian issues had no effects on the tourism of neighboring countries.

It will be interesting to see what exactly happens with Syria. Being in America, a young country, I forget these are battles that have been going on for a long time. Our news in the US, however, shows an escalation between the 2 countries with Turkey sending military to the border. I understand there will be a meeting in a couple of days to discuss ways to calm things down. We are hoping that will help.

Thanks for your replies.
