Best way to make the most of one day in Istanbul?

We (family of four, 2 adults and our 23 and 19 year old) are on an eastern med cruise and will have one full day in Istanbul when the cruise ship docks there.

We have never visited Istanbul and would like to make the most of the day seeing some of main z attractions, does anyone have any recommendations for how to get around and make the most of the day, or would we be best to stick with the excursions on offer from the cruise ship?

The cruise liner will rob you so don't go for this option. It depends what your interests are. When we did a day on our cruise I already knew that I wanted to visit the Grand Bazaar and we spent a lot of time in there and then just wandered around the surrounding area and walked back to the ship. However Istanbul has a lot to see and do and you need to do your homework to see what there is that coincides with what you want to do. Transportation is good too in the area so that's an added bonus. Have fun.

Hi I would recommend that you take a taxi from the airport to the Blue Mosque, visit the Hagia Sohia and cistern and the Grand Bazaar. All within easy reach of each other. you will also have enough time to have a lovely lunch and enjoy baklava. Istanbul is a fantastic city. Enjoy. If you move quickly the royal palace is also within easy walking distance and end off the day with a visit to the hamam - turkish bath. Catch a Taxi back to Ataturk Airport for your flight. The spice market is also lovely for presents of Turkish Rose tea, spices and the most divine turkish delight.

We had a day and a half stopover in Istanbul on our cruise. We didn't get a taxi, just walked from the port towards Galata bridge along the water, bought tokens for the tram and caught the tram up to the Grand Bazaar. It was so easy and the tram was much more fun than sitting in traffic in a taxii. Just get some lira to buy the tokens and pay for other stuff from an ATM near where you buy the tram tokens. The next day we went to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, had lunch in a lovely little cafe near there and browsed in some little shops nearby. We also walked up to Galata tower on the way back after we got off the tram. The view was lovely! We could have fit a lot of other places in but just really enjoyed wandering and soaking up some of the atmosphere in this wonderful city. Istanbul is so beautiful from the water and coming in by cruise ship is a lovely way to enter the city. I'm sure you will love it whatever you decide to do.
