Zakkary, it is better stick to the lira. You can easily exchange your AUDs into lira at Döviz (exchange) shops. Also, you can find an ATM at every corner if you think it is more convenient to use one to obtain the local money.

The standard practice is to utilize the ATM's for daily cash requirements. Just alert you financial institution that you will be out of the country. Happy travels!

Hi zakkary, yes it is readily available for exchange.

Simply present AUD to any of the many money exhange (Döviz) places found throughout the city to exchange across to lira as needed.

The Döviz shops across the Grand Bazaar/Beyazit/Kapalicarsi tram stop offer accurate rates.

Don't use the exchangers around Sultanahmet or Taksim as they usually give very low rates unfavourable to tourists.

At other times you can withdraw liras from any of the atms marked cirrus/maestro that accept Australian key cards.
