Questions about taking a taxi to Ephesus

We will be in port in Kusadasi on Thursday, May 24th from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and plan to go to Ephesus and the Ephesus Museum in Selcuk.

We visited Ephesus before on a ship's tour but this time we would like to go at our own pace instead of on a group tour. Since there will be many people from the ships in port at the same time, is it possible that we may not be able to get a taxi to take us to Ephesus? And does the taxi drop you off or wait a few hours for you and then take you back to Kusadasi or on to Selcuk and then back to the ship? if we are dropped off there can we count on Taxis being at Ephesus to take us on to Selcuk and then back to the ship? We certainly can't take a chance that we miss our ship leaving!

Also, would we miss out on a lot of information about Ephesus if we don't hire a guide but bring our own guidebook? And has anyone used a guidebook and map that they liked?

Thank you so much for taking your time to answer my questions and concerns.

When there are ships in port every taxi inKuşadası is waiting at the gang plank LOL!You'll have no problems getting one.Ask the driver to drop you off at the top gate and walk down through the city for ease and better views. You can hire audio guides at the gates which are very good in addition to using a guide book.

When you leave the lower gate you can take a taxi into Selçuk or back to Kuşadası whichever you prefer.Again always loads of taxi's,even on cruise days.

If you are a couple then you be lucky enough to find someone to share the taxi costs with in both directions.Don't book a taxi for both ways as there is no guarantee he would be waiting for you at the bottom gate!If a fare came by he'd go.

Don't just take the first taxi, go to a taxi rank with a board advertising Ephesus and get a firm price.

Thank you both very much for the good advice. But gibson123, what is a "taxi rank"?

The different company lines or booths. Not all cabs belong to the same company but for this journey most charge pretty much the same price.Good advice though to agree the price before you get in the car regardless of what price is given on the advert board.

Sorry lost in translation, a rank is simply a place where taxis are allowed to gather or park, each company on Kusadasi has a separate "rank" and most have a little wooden booth or office next to them. The boss or controller of the taxi company tends to be in or around the booth and he tends to be the best person to agree price with. As you will leave from a fixed, identifiable point there is an interest by the owner in making things fair and square. However just taking a taxi that is waiting on the street is no guarantee, I have found on at least 3 occasions when taking a taxi from the port that the meter is going incredibly fast, but never find that when I use the cab firms. I really only use the following cab companies now as none of the drivers have ever got "lost" put the meter too high, or driven like a maniac. These are Kusadasi cabs and Marina Taxis. However, their offices are a good ten minutes walk along the waterfront from the Port. Beside the fish market there is a small concourse full of restaurants and beside the closest restaurant to the road - black and white its called, there is a cab office, you will see the drivers sitting under the trees on seats, ask there, they are also quite reliable.
